I agree that a transfer-free network would be extremely impractical, but I don't understand how that relates to express buses. Transfers are possible, as long as you have MetroCard. You just pay the step-up if coming from local bus or subway. Transfers are also free between express buses. Hence, when I used to travel between Douglaston and Marine Park regularly, instead of Q30 or Q46 to subway to B2 or B100 ($4 MetroCard money in 2008), I would frequently do QM1A to BM4 ($5 MetroCard money in 2008). I did not travel enough to warrant an Unlimited, but if I had an unlimited, of course, the subway usually won out (though every now and then I'd treat myself to an express-bus-plus, just to ride in style for a week, doing little to no walking).
