If you were planning the new subway map in 1979, what colors would you have given the trunk lines?

I kinda liked all the different colors before 1979. I like the lavander F, the yellow 6 Black B, Yellow N, Green RR etc.

TBH I would have gave them the same colors. I would color the different shuttles differently though.

Well I was born after all these mass changes and I wasn't around for the (K) and (N)/(R) swap either.

that N / R swap was weird. I remember the N went to 57th & 7th. Then it was extended to Continental, then it was swapped with the RR.

The N/R swap was made for logistical reasons. The R did not have direct access to a yard, where the N had one at each end. It wouldn't have made much difference in the context of ridership since few ride end-to-end for regular travel.

The colors for CBD trunks came from the longest route on each, hence the dark blue (A), red (2), yellow (N) and orange (D).

Presumably they didn't want black going across for the 14th Street line (on the Vignelli map, the black used for the 5, B, J, and LL was more of a charcoal so the black station stop dots would be visible), so it became gray.

Lex logically should have been magenta (4), but it wouldn't have been clearly discernible next to 7th Avenue Red on the Bronx segment (needless to say, it would have clashed).

Nassau should have taken the light blue of the M (which ran to Coney Island at the time) were it not for the JFK Express.

As for the G and 7, the former had already become a lighter green with the arrival of the R46 cars (the bulkhead bullet appeared lighter because the curtain was thinner to allow for greater visibility of the backlighting). There weren't many other colors left for the 7 so they went with the a common "opposite" color of it's former orange (or peach or coral depending on how good the printer that made the signage was).

I think the reason they went with brown for Nassau and green for Lex is for contrast, red and green go well together. That left brown for Nassau which I guess they felt looked better next to yellow or orange than purple.

red and green go well together.

Unless you're color-blind. Are there any color-blind Subchatters? Are 7th and Lex distinguishable from each other?

Coney Island is easily accessible from Whitehall Street.

The problem with the old RR is that there wasn't a yard that was easily accessible from either of it's terminals. Coney Island required a reversing move at either 36th or 59th Street. Jamaica required a reversing move in the 60th Street Tunnel. Corona wouldn't work since trains couldn't fit without shaving the platform edges back. Even if they could, a reversing move at Queensboro Plaza would be required.

Yep. Though not quite the same situation, kinda why the (2) and (3) switched southern terminals in 1983. The (2) had direct access to two yards, 239 St and Livonia, while the (3) had Lenox yard, but its space was inadequate. Since a bunch of 3s layed up at Livonia anyway, they decided to just send the 3 to Newlots and let the 2 use 239 St (though I think a handful still lay up at Livonia).

I would have used exactly two colors: black and white.

Color-coding the lines was a mistake.

Marker lights, OTOH, were useful.

Nope, they aren't. But that's not because I'm color blind; I just can't tell the numbers 5 and 5 apart...or was it 2 and 2? Or...oh, what the heck.
