1 train to New Lots next summer |
|
Posted by 7th Avenue Express on Mon Nov 30 07:52:47 2009 They will be working on Cortlandt Street on the 1 line next summer, therefore the 1 train will be extended to New Lots, the 2 will probably scrape the wall AGAIN and the 3 will be cut back to 14th street. Same service pattern as post 9/11One thing is for sure, if I am able to pick a job, I will not be picking the 1. We are talking one long trip on that 1 line. |

They just can't seem to keep that South Ferry station open.On a serious note, it makes sense due to the fact that work at the WTC site is being done on the West side of it. I know I'll be glad to have my (1) train connection at Cortlandt Street again. |

Yes it was to spend Federal dollars on a useless 10 car station which reduces capacity on the 1 line. They talk about providing enough station overrun so as to provide faster inbound train speeds but these suckers can't even break 10 MPH coming in, plus the diamond crossover is too far away. |

As far as I've heard, they dropped that idea because PATH cannot afford to close that World Trade Center station on a temporary basis. The only way they can close the station is during the weekends and provide shuttle service between Exchange Place and World Trade Center. |

And on a side note, this will inconvenience the (1) riders who rely on South Ferry. While they do have the (R) and (W), I think it'd be best to re-open the loop station and have (6) trains service South Ferry. But this depends on whether or not it will interfere with (4) and (5) service, especially during rush hours. |

The Federal money could have been used for other Lower Manhattan projects, or a different version of the South Ferry project. |

One reason why I hated riding the 7th Avenue line after this all happened in the first place! Well, hopefully now once this is all done, there won't be any more closures after that! When you have a closure like that, and the 2 scrapes the wall, overcrowding conditions exist! When the 3 was back to its normal service like now, it isn't that bad at all! I'm guessing now that when this post 9/11 resumes temporarilly, R62's from Livonia will be on the 1 or as temporary, they will go back to the 4 bringing more R62A back there. We shall see! |

I remember back in the fifties some time when the #1 used to run to New Lots regularly.I also remember one day in the late sixties, during a reroute whwn I saw both the 1 and the 6 both pull into Utica Avenue at the exact same time. It definately will affect (4) & (5) service because of the crossover at Brooklyn Bridge that (6) trains would have to take. But either way, sending the (6) to South Ferry wouldn't do much because Bowling Green is right there at South Ferry (just a short block or two walk). Its service to the West Side that is being lost at South Ferry. What the MTA would have to do is either send people to the (4) or (5) at Bowling Green and take a train to Fulton Street to transfer there for a (1) or (2), or reopen old South Ferry to the (5) so that people wouldn't crowd onto packed (4) trains. |

The last timer clears at about 8 mph, but a train on 1 track can get the line-up to leave before the train on 4 track is fully in the station. Basically when a train reaches the last timer on 4 track the train on 1 track can leave the station, it is just a matter of getting the doors closed a rush hr. |

Do you mean the curve in the station and the hooligan at the conductors position which has kept them from putting in monitors even though the cameras are in place. That is the reason for the platform C/R's at SF. |

If there was no reason to increase service, there's no point to that line of argument.A better question at this point in time is "Is there any proof that the scheduled level of service, prior to the opening of the new terminal, decreased?" An important follow-up to that question would be "What schedule changes were made that led to the change in service, if any?" And the answer to those questions is "No, there has not been a decrease in scheduled level of service due to the opening of the new terminal." |

Maybe this would be a good time to experiment with the 5/6 running to the old South Ferry station, at least outside of rush hours provided a stairway could be built to access the short platform at Bowling Green so there can be a BG-SF shuttle during the daytime hours. |

The final service plan hasn't been decided yet, AFAIK. What's definite is that, at the request of the Port Authority, NYCT will cut off subway service between Chambers Street and South Ferry to allow the Port Authority to do some heavy-duty construction around the subway tunnel in ground zero. This will last for approximately six weeks over the summer, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It's possible the (1) may go to both New Lots Avenue AND Flatbush Avenue, with the (5) cut back to Bowling Green. There's even a slight, SLIGHT possibility of a temporary equipment swap, putting R-142s on the (1) and R-62A's on the (5), so that the (1) can have the digital signage necessary to easily reflect a different destination. Everything is subject to change for now. We'll know more later. |

When the #1 ran to New Lots in the 1950s it ran express from 96 St to Chambers and what became the #3 ran local from 96 to So/Fy. There was also #1 Bway Lcl service between 137 St and So/Fy M-F from about 6:00 AM to midnight. In those days even though the R-21s and 22s had numbers on the end signs, IRT lines were referred to by name rather than number. |

There is no reason for the #1 to alternate between N/Lots and Flat since the #2 will also be running. Service S/O Chambers can be substantially the same as it is now with the #1 replacing the #3 in Bkln. During midnights it really wouldn't be necessary to sent the #1 all the way to N/Lots so they can either turn #1s on 1 track in Chambers St and run them exp N/B to 14 St or possible turn them back at Atlantic like the #3 110 St service did in the 1980s during the Lenox dewatering project. |

As it is now, there's no crossovers involved in the service at all. With the old pattern, trains would have to cross each others path; Lenox trains would need to get to the local, and Broadway trains would need to get to the express. |
