Chicago Is My Kinda Town (PHOTOS) |
|
|
Posted by ChicagoPCCLCars on Wed Nov 18 12:25:47 2009 Chicago may be second and third in many heavy rail categories, but it is always FIRST in my book and I love to share photos of our "L". Here's numbers 57 through 61.![]() A six car drag from Linden AV threads through the north Howard ST interlocking bound for the southbound platform where the switchman will drop the springs and chains inbetween the three dueces to facilitate splitting them up in the yard. ![]() An eight car Blue line train roars through the median of the Eisenhower Expresswy inbetween Halsted/UIC and Racine stations, past the Morgan Middle Track used to turn certain rush hour trains. When it opened, the then Congress ST line was the world's first median heavy rail and featured ten car platforms, a feature never used as six cars was the maximum up until the late 90s?? ![]() Seen from the southbound Armitage AV platform, a northbound Purple line train slows to stop while a southbound Red line train disapears into the subway. Off in the far distance is the northbound's follower. For about 100 feet, there were six tracks here, two express tracks into the subway, and two express and two local tracks on the elevated. That ended when the CTA took the outside elevated tracks out of service between Armitage and Chicago AV. On wonders if the entire elevated would have survived if original plans to make the State ST subway a four track line was built. ![]() An inbound Orange line train has almost cleared Tower 12 interlocking. The operator probably gave it a shot of power and a little bit too much of speed as that rear car is really leaning outward on the flat curve through the crossing. Loop tracks are designated inside and outside, so our Orange line train is on the inside track. ![]() I call this shot, "Two Dozen 3200s at T-12." Two Orange line trains and one Brown line train on the left. The Brown has cleared Tower 12 and is accelerating to the station stop at Adams/ Wabash. The Orange line trains are awaiting the next move. Protocol calls for the inbound train to get first rights, so the train in the background should cross over and turn to the right in front of the outbound train. Plans call for this junction to be controlled remotely by the new Tower 18 by 2010. Well, that brings us up to date with the 61 shosts I got added to Dot Net. It really wasn't all that hard and I learned a lot in the process. I'll be in the cab making announcements for the Holiday Train which debuts this Saturday, hopefully with some sunshine. As a native New Yorker, I have rode every NYC line. But in 2005 during my 1st trip to the windy city , I must say that tower 18 is the coolest thing I have ever seen on heavy rail. It must have been great 60 years ago when the Met lines used the loop and ran out via Marshfield Jct. While not even close to the size of Coney Island Yards and shops, Howard street is pretty cool also with the flyovers for the Skokie swift and the loop around the yard and all of those slip switches. But those tight curves on the el are something. The one on the pink line curving onto the Lake St el from the Paulina Connector is a bit scary! |

Chicago has great railfanning!I think the biggest problem with it is that it's too flat and boring and devoid of scenery to put the trains in! Oh, why did it have to be located in Illinois? |

The 2600s lost their gray paint in mid-life rehab. The 2400s lost their red, white and blue to add to the conformity. The 2200s and the 3200s never had any paint. So now all is in harmony. You might find more affordable housing south of Midway Airport along Cicero AV, between 63rd ST and 71st ST. Only the blue and red lines run 24/7.David Harrison |

I must admire anyone who appreciates our CTA "L". So you like tight curves...90 ft radius 10 MPH. Originally the "L" had 15, six have been eased, four have been demolished, leaving seven in use today. But the Paulina curve is over twice as large.David Harrison |

But flatness leads to straight streets and alleys and lets lots of tangent track be built which leads to good speed runs. Ya gotta love that. Then too, at one time in history, the location of Chicago was slated to be part of the state of Wisconsin.David Harrison |

(I do not have any accurate or estimated numbers.) But the Magnificent Mile LIghts Festival will still be held that Saturday, with the parade and the fireworks and the Holiday Train is timed to support that activity.. The City's Official tree will be lighted later. There's still the Thanksgiving Parade down State ST. And there's still the food distributions that will occur from the Train on the Blue line. There is still a large majority that will benefit from a strong Holiday celebration and robust Holiday spending. I am neither a spokesman for the train event or a sponsor, but I will volunteer my special talent along with many other volunteers while being mindful of those who will be less fortunate this Christmas. I agree wholeheartedly about the railfaning. Is there any other place that has so much going through the flat junctions at Van Buren/Wabash and at Lake/ Wells. In the old days, the platforms at many of the Loop stations were twice as long to allow two trains to berth at the same time. I bet this was taken into consideration when the State ST subway was constructed with the worlds longest continuous platform. The new Loop signaling that's being put in includes wayside signals with track trips to augment the cab signals and allow trains to close in, thus increasing the capacity of the two Loop tracks. When the Orange and Brown lines get throughrouted, that'll relieve pressure on two sides of the Loop, but not the two junctions. Putting the Purple in the subway would bring some relief all around.David Harrison |

I haven't been able to find a schedule anywhere for this year's train anywhere, neither CTA's website nor Google showed anything except for previous years. Do you have the schedule for this year?
