Can employees have 1/2 fare metrocards as well as employee passes? |
|
|
Posted by b1bus on Thu Nov 19 19:58:59 2009 Can a senior citizen or medicare employee also have a 1/2 fare metrocard? After all, LI bus and MTA bus don't accept NYCT employee passes. Could also be used on Metro North and LIRR. |

That's so weird to me. They should be allowed to ride all of them as a professional courtesy. Don't the airlines still do that or did they get rid of it? It used to be that airline crews could ride any airlines for free as long as they were in uniform. |

IINM NYCT or MTA is not a city agency. The city does however, provide subsidy to the MTA to help fund NYCT but NYCT is still a state agency. So no, they should not ride for free. Hell, they IINM are going to make city vehicles pay tolls on TBTA facilities |

You're right...SIRT doesn't accept employee passes. You can get by if you flash your pass at someone to let you in.Kinda odd since they use Transit resources to maintain their system. |

They used to do it for free if you needed to travel a route that your airline didn't serve. I remember meeting some flight attendants from Pan Am that lived somewhere in North Carolina. They flew internationally, but since Pan Am didn't fly to North Carolina they would fly other airlines for free back and forth to JFK where they started their route. This was 20 or more years ago though. |

I don't think that it matters whether NYCT is a state or city-run agency, either way it's still made to transport people within the city. The people that work for the city it's made to serve should also be able to ride free for their help in running the city, and to make sure that they can get to their workplace without any financial burdens to make sure that they can keep on working and helping the city. |

Sorry I disagree. Where would the MTA get the lost revenue if they did that, or is the city gonna pay for the free rides? Which means us taxpayers pay. Transportation is a normal expense of working. Using your logic, cops, firemen, doctors, nurses should ride free too the help too? Or, I guess me as an MNR worker should be allowed to ride NYCT for free since MNR is a public service?Where do you draw the line. Sorry, but I don't think your logic is right. |

I think if you show your TA pass to an MTA bus driver it would be honored (at least most times) but not if you swipe. Haven't tried it though. I remember when TA employees couldn't ride MaBSTOA buses. |

I agree with you regarding nurses and doctors, but I would think that members of the NYPD and FDNY would be able to ride NYCT for free as long as they're in uniform. That's what SEPTA does (from the SEPTA City Transit Division fare tariff):a. The following persons will be carried on regularly scheduled route service operated by City Transit Division at no charge: 1) Police Officers, Sheriffs and Sheriff's Deputies, of the City of Philadelphia. Officers must be in dress uniform to receive free transportation. 2) City of Philadelphia firefighters, when in uniform. 3) SEPTA Board members and Authority Officers presenting valid passes. 4) SEPTA employees and retirees presenting valid picture ID transportation passes. 5) Detectives of the City of Philadelphia when presenting valid identification and gold badge. |

No, official policy is no. Many conductors will honor it as a professional courtesy but it is not required that they do. My advice is have a ticket just in case. It is the same way in return. MNR/LIRR employees aren't allowed to ride NYCT for free but it depends on the station agent. |

That is not necessarily the case since although the NYCTA is under the MTA umbrella, its employees are not direct employees of the parent agency but rather the subsidiary agency with the possible exception of some of the managerial staff who were directly hired by the MTA and assigned to the NYCTA or its other constituent agencies. At the present time NYCTA employees are members of the NYC Employee Retirement system and in other ways are subject to the NYC civil service laws and regulations. |

How are you going to pay for this? Taxes or is it going to come out of their salary? If the latter, then that's how TransitChek works and if I worked at one of those jobs I'd prefer to choose whether I wanted a transit benefit or not. |

I work for MNR serving the public and don't get paid very well (hence I work a 2nd f/t job) I'd appreciate free rides on the subway or buses. But should it happen? No.NYCT is not a city agency (some employees of NYCT may be city) it is a state agency. The only ones who should ride for free IMHO and by current day rule is NYPD/FDNY. That is it. Sorry, city workers have a job like anyone else and should pay like everyone else. A lot of workers work with the public and don't make much money either. City workers in other areas and states don't get free public transit, hell some don't even have a public transit system. City workers can get TransitChek and pay much less than the $89 MetroCard. I get TransitChek too from my non-MNR job and quite content with it. |
