Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Wed Nov 18 20:11:05 2009 The time has come!! 9:50 AM.....departure time for the last of the NJT Meadowlands Trains, #3141!! All brake tests completed, and with a good word from the MNR Road Foreman,, #3141 sets sail from New Haven!! Heeeeeeeeeeeeeere we go!!! #7046 on the west end.No sooner than a "Proceed Cab" signal indicates we are OK to go, in comes action from off the road in the form of some "Tomato Cans"...... ![]() ![]() More "Tomato Cans" in the West Yard..... ![]() The work continues at CP 271..... ![]() The mega-nest at CAT 1046A still unoccupied!! Appears the builder is out for the day!! :-D ![]() Woodmont Tower (S.S. 73+), CP 266..... ![]() Wow, folks!! Upstairs and downstairs, we have standing room only!! CRRRRRRRRRRRUNCHY!! :-D..... ![]() ![]() (Again, of note this is one of the more recent MLV Cab Car arrivals at NJT!! Still full of "New Car" smell, undeniably clean both in the passenger compartments and the cab!! Immmmmmmmmmmmpressive!! We'll see how long that lasts!!) Entering CP 261 westward, Devon Tower, Waterbury Branch diverges off to the right!!..... ![]() ![]() ![]() Phase Break indicator east of CP 257 (the position-light signal looking thing!!) Though barely visible, the lights are on, which forms a full ring, indicating that the power phase break is deenergized, and the controller must be placed in "coast" for M-series and Amtrak electric engines, the NJT equipment have track-born apparatus between the guage of the rails (notice between the rail guages of all 4 tracks just past the catenary tower)which automatically knocks off the power to the ALP engine in an effect similar to placing the controller in coast, the power kicks back in once in the clear of the phase break, and if the lights are off, no action is needed by the engineer..... ![]() East Bridgeport Yard, chock fulla "Tomato Cans"..... ![]() ![]() Bridgeport Station, with a nice flishy flashy green "Proceed Cab" signal awaiting us ahead at CP 255..... ![]() Amtrak "Toaster & Tubes" heads east thru CP 255 as #3141 departs Bridgeport..... ![]() ![]() Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry "GRAND REPUBLIC" awaits the call to set sail!!..... ![]() A westward view of the soon to be Fairfield Transportation Center Station (or Black Rock for the Black Rock Turnpike, or Fairfield Metro.....name still to be determined!!)..... ![]() After picking up some Fairfielders, we are off, and as we leave Fairfield, "Tomato Cans" arrive..... ![]() Southport, with the "Baci Italian Restaurant" built into the old eastbound station building, and a newly redone westbound station building, all fire damage repaired!!..... ![]() ![]() As we roar on west (kinda like LION!! :-D) from Southport, we end this part at this point, and shall pick it up from Westport, and onward from there!! Thanks for joining in this part again!! Stay tuned, as our adventure continues!! Of course, I hope you all are enjoying thus far!! :-) |

So I had the chance to catch up with a very good engineer buddy who was lucky enough to land this for the day, and he is a top notch operator having worked with him for a bit when I was on the Danbury Branch (Stamford-based conductor/engineer run). The conductor and trainman for this run are also A #1 guys too!! A lot of seniority was on this train, I tell you that!! (Sorry, mine does not even come close to these guys!! lol) |

It should be noted, interestingly enough, that the trains' destination IS NOT Secaucus!!! After the NJT crew boards and the train departs, it is officially a NY Penn-Trenton train!!! |

Must be nice knowing that on game day the 10:14, 11:14, and 12:14 Trenton locals are MLV trains. |

Part V, posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Thu Nov 19 06:49:38 2009. I haven't heard a single NJT employee speak positively about those cars. It has nothing to do with laziness and creativity. It has to do with pain in the knees and legs after working that equipment over a period of time. Even the young and healthy guys who never had leg/knee problems are experiencing them now. Plus, try making sure everybody is off the train at the end of the line, when you have a 10 car set to check (Coast Line, Corridor, and M&E), just you and the conductor (after the TC's all run off into the night). The only thing you have over the RVL (only 6 cars) and the M&E is that Metro North has no low level platforms to go along with the 10 billion steps already needed to walk during a typical trip. The RVL and the M&E still have mostly low level platforms. |

See what happens if you have to work 4 -6 multilevel trips per day. That's how it is on the RVL, and with all the low platforms thrown in. If you end up only working 1 or 2 a day on Metro North, then you (and even I) might be able to handle it. But currently I work 6 trains (3 round trips) on the RVL. Not good. |
