PHOTOS: Germany & France, 1994 - Part 1

I've been scanning slides from a trip in 1994, mostly in Germany, but also a few days in Paris. My wife and I flew into Frankfurt and stayed there overnight before heading to Paris. I didn't have a chance to really see anything (transit-wise) in Frankfurt except the railroad station. I did get part of a tram in one picture.







In Paris I didn't try to take pictures in the Metro because of my primitive technology (35mm Kodachrome). I managed to get a few hours to poke around on my own and headed out to the 'burbs to see the T1 tram which was only a couple of years old at the time. This was my first low-floor tram.

Excellent pics. I hadn't realised that the ICE trains had been around for fifteen years - time flies.

Love the classic photo of Cite station on the Paris Metro. Did you actually ride the T1 tram? The one time I did, it was the most overcrowded public transit vehicle I have ever been on in my life!

That was my impression, too! After I took that picture, about halfway along the line, I boarded the next tram and somehow got a seat a couple of rows behind the driver's compartment. Then the aisle and the entrance area filled up again. Then a woman squeezed on, pushing a grocery-store shopping cart, a big four-wheel one. The driver shouted at her a few times, obviously demanding that she get that thing out of there. Then he picked up his phone and talked to his supervisor or dispatcher or whoever. There was some more back and forth with the woman. Finally, after about five minutes, we started moving again. A couple of stops later, she got off.

I gotta get "over there". BTW I didn't know Kodachrome was considered primitive in the 90's. That prmitive stuff made for some nice shots!

Leaving Paris from the Gare de l'Est on the 8:54 to return to Germany:



Instead of riding through to Frankfurt, we changed trains somewhere to go up the Mosel River to Koblenz. This is a very scenic stretch with vineyards and a tunnel:

I was really referring to the overall process as primitive, especially having to shoot "blind" without being able to monitor results on the spot. I realize now that a lot of my slides are underexposed which makes them hard to scan. And for some reason my scanner (Nikon LS-40) and software (Vuescan) makes my Kodachrome come out blue by default, even though it looks more or less OK when I hold it up to the light. I have to tweak the scanning software to add more red to the exposure, and fiddle with curves etc. in Photoshop to get things to look plausible. Negatives are much easier for me to scan.

It's fun going back through this old stuff and remembering details of the trip as I go along. I just wish I had taken more pictures. It was hard for me to really "let loose" when I had to pay for film and processing. And of course traveling with with a non-railfan tends to put a damper on things, too. Can't spend a lot of time hunting for photo locations and waiting for the next train/tram/whatever to come along...

They're quite a long way apart at the moment, except for T2 at Issy Val de Seine and T3 at Pont de Gargiliano - a one-stop ride on RER C separates these two tram termini. The T2 is supposed to get extended northwards from La Defense in the relatively near future, but this extension will still leave it some distance from the T1.

I just realized that Krefeld is now the German city that I've visited most often. A friend of my wife's from graduate school lives there, so we always visit when we go to Germany, so far in 1994, 2004 and 2009. By chance, this was also one of the cities that I visited way back in 1972 when I was in college. It has a nice medium-sized meter-gauge tram system with four routes, and a standard-gauge interurban line from Düsseldorf, about 12 miles away.

When we visit, my wife always spends a day in the classroom with her friend, who also teaches. The husband has to work during the week, so I'm left to fend for myself, and I don't have to tell you what I spend my time doing! :-)

Here's an 043 local tram and a U76 interurban at the terminal at Rheinstrasse in downtown Krefeld:



An interurban rolls down the Ostwall boulevard just after leaving the terminal. Note the logo at the front upper left corner. It indicates that this train carries a cafe (Rheinbahn-Bistro). If you look carefully at the track you can make out the dual gauge.



An interurban stops at the Grundend station at the edge of Krefeld. Not coincidentally, this happens to be the station closest to our friends' house.



Grundend is also a terminal for one of the local tram routes, which loops through the parking lot. This operator didn't have any problem with having his picture taken, in fact he volunteered when he saw me setting up. I wish I had waited a bit to get another shot as it was pulling out so I could have captured more of that paint scheme that reminds me of a traditional German Fachwerk-style house.



A short distance from Grundend is the tram stop for our friends' house.



These two types of local trams were built around 1970 and 1980 respectively, and are still running, but not for much longer. Operators are now training on new low-floor Bombardier Flexity Outlooks that have arrived recently. They're supposed to go into service starting next month. Lots of pictures on this page.

I'm glad I got a chance to see the old-timers one last time this past summer. One of these days I'll get around to posting those pictures...

Now we head to Berlin. The "historic S-Bahn" train that's maintained by volunteers as a museum-type operation was running one day. My wife wasn't feeling well that day so she decided to stay at our hotel while I went out riding around. I gave myself a tour of mostly eastern Berlin, sampling a little bit of everything. Right now I'll concentrate on the S-Bahn.

Another day we went up to the observation deck / restaurant of the big TV tower that the East Germans built as a showpiece. It gives a nice view of the elevated S-Bahn coming in from the east:



And somewhere along the way I saw this old-timer tucked under a bridge. I don't know who owned it or whether it was operable:

Now we wrap up this tour with some glimpses of Berlin's U-Bahn and trams. Eberswalder Strasse (route U2) is on an elevated section of the U-Bahn that opened in 1913. Trams run alongside and cross underneath the elevated structure here.





From Eberswalder Strasse I rode tram 50 north to the end of the line at Buchholz.



The Hellersdorf U-Bahn station is in the outer reaches of eastern Berlin, on a section of route U5 that opened on July 1989, only four months before the Wall came down. This area was developed during the Communist years, with large apartment blocks.



From Hellersdorf I rode back into central Berlin by tram, changing routes at Landsberger Allee / Weissenseer Weg.



Finally, we made a day trip to Potsdam, just southwest of Berlin, to visit Frederick the Great's palace Sanssouci. Potsdam has its own tram system that is also part of the Verkehrsverbund Berlin-Brandenburg that coordinates operations and common fares and tickets for the Berlin region.



This isn't quite the end of the tour, but the last couple of pictures are off-topic here so I've posted them over on BusChat. :-)

T3 actually corresponds almost exactly with part of the original Petite Ceinture, though the tramway runs in the median of boulevards rather than on a separate RoW.

The steam loco tucked under the bridge appears to be a fireless one - which would have been supplied with steam from a boiler in some industrial plant - as its doesn't have a chimney. The accompanying four-wheel passenger car still has a 'DR' (the old East German railway) rather than a 'DB' logo, several years after reunification, so these are both obviously preserved vehicles. Fireless locos were always quite rare.
