As for your second paragraph, in those days they gave out overtime like water, the motormen were hungry for it unlike today, and there was no such thing as a budget.

They just seperated GE cars (2/4/5) from the Westinghouse cars (1/3/6) on the "mainline". Even for awhile, they did the same thing on the 7, except that the GE cars had to have 1 Westinghouse car which all the singles were although IIRC they did convert 9337(?) to a GE.

6239 wasn't the only TA car with A/C. There were 10 R-17s with A/C (I don't recall their numbers) which also had hard fiberglass seats in the same red color as the conventional leatherette seats but which were scooped out like R-62 seats. The A/C didn't work well on those cars either and it was removed and replace by fans from the Trane Co. which were similar to but slightly different from the conventional axiflow fans on the other cars.

Regardless of what he wants, then he will either have to be satisfied with the R-62As or else explain why his constituents are being crammed into 10 car trains of the "new" cars since at the present time without additional B or C cars for either the R-142s or 142As 11 car consists of either type cannot be operated.

That's anecdotal since there is no proof that the cars were ever assigned to the line - just operated there, perhaps. Much like the R-68 that ran on the Queens Blvd line for a month or so, it was there but never assigned to the line. However, the point is unimportant enough that if you still insist, I will stand corrected.

The R-17s with air conditioning were 6800-6809. The original air conditioners were replaced first by more powerful ones, then by fans when the new AC didn't work well either.

I beleive the door tones on the PA1/PA2/PA3s were added when they overhauled by MK in 1987, and they were not originally delilvered with chimes. Why the R26-42s did not receive door chimes when rebuilt is another question.

Actually there certainly is proof, since when the R-42s and 44s were delivered each group,of cars was limited to a small number of routes. The cars on the A, AA and B lines only had signs for those lines. The R-40Ms and 42s that were assigned to the EE, GG and N Lines only had signs for those lines etc. Therefore of the r-42s on the A line had the proper signs, then its obvious that they were assigned to that line. By the way when the R-16s were new, 50 of them (I believe 6300 - 6349) were assigned to the A Line and remained there till at least 1958 to make up for the R-10s that were temporarily assigned to the BMT Eastern Division.

Futzing with roll signs, charging a train and moving it doesn't compensate for the paper railroad. If the car desk says that train didn't exist, then by gum, it was a flat being pushed by a diesel. Some departments used pens on their gap sheets. :)
