smdb?? If the c/r did that and they get hurt from the sudden stop, guess what? the idiots sue (most likely will win) and the c/r may have gotten in trouble, since they will ask this question (maybe): "If you knew you had people on the back car of the train surfing, and you knew that pulling the cord will cause the train to stop suddenly with a jerk, didn't you think they'd get hurt?" Better option, call the cops and don't move when at the next stop. IMHO

LION thought of this.

If train is doing 30 mph, then they are moving at 30 mph.

If the C/R pulls the cord, the train slows to 0, dewds on the back will continue to move at 30 mph, ergo they will be pinned to the rear of the train until it comes to a full stop.

So they might not fall off. Too bad.

That mention of the open rear vestibule sparked a memory.

I couldn't have been more than six years old -- around 1960 -- and my grandmother took me for my first ride on the LIRR to Albertson to visit cousins. We changed from the Brooklyn train at Jamaica and boarded the last car of a diesel train, into a vestibule that was open at the back.

I instantly sensed this would be a lot more interesting than my usual subway rides, I distinctly remember asking my grandmother if we could ride back there. Of course, the answer was no.

Lion used to moonlight as an EMT (maybe still does, we're all advancing in years here). One (or two) less jobs for him if they do not fall off and get injured. So, in a way, he is thankful they survived; but he is sorry that the EMTs don't have work.

That increases the danger of the activity considerably. Sudden deceleration could knock trainsurfers off rather easily. Wouldn't better policy be to notify the T/O to gradually slow down, and radio ahead to have the trainsurfers arrested at the next station?

Whale...

The LION thinks that it would hurt even more if they got clopped into a low clearance somewhere.

And is a conductor required to know where every low clearance is? Is the T/O?

LION thinks "pull the cord" is correct, and as long as that is the rule, the rule will protect the crew. If the C/R were to say "well, I thought pulling the cord would put them in greater danger" and something happens to them anyway, as it well may, then the MTA cannot stand behind their actions even if it wanted to. And in looking for outside scapegoats, the C/R made himself el primo target No. 1.

Nope, you look out for number 1, you pull the cord.

Then I think they need to revise their trainings. They will though one day when a c/r does pull the cord the idiots get injured sues the MTA and wins.

Well that is if c/r's are still around:(

Also, nothing personal but if I were you recheck your training manuals/instructions to make sure you understood it right because it makes no sense they would tell crews to do that.

It makes perfect sense.

You stop the train.

Stopping the train in an unsafe manner is likely to put the onus on the train crew should the trainsurfer die from falling due to sudden deceleration. Should the surfer die simply from encountering a low clearance area or falling on his own accord, it's unlikely that the train crew would face any blame.

By your logic, the police ought to prevent someone like Alain Robert from climbing skyscrapers by shooting him off. After all, it makes perfect sense. You get him off the building.

Well IMHO it is wrong. It can injure the idiots and the crew sdhould stop the train @ the next station with tail of last car in tunnel and wait with doors closed for cops when cops get there t/o inches the tail on the last car into the station and the idiots get off with help from cops.

Clearances do not matter here. There will be nothing to hit them. Train rears do not hit walls or come that close sorry.
