That mention of the open rear vestibule sparked a memory.I couldn't have been more than six years old -- around 1960 -- and my grandmother took me for my first ride on the LIRR to Albertson to visit cousins. We changed from the Brooklyn train at Jamaica and boarded the last car of a diesel train, into a vestibule that was open at the back. I instantly sensed this would be a lot more interesting than my usual subway rides, I distinctly remember asking my grandmother if we could ride back there. Of course, the answer was no. |
