The M-4 & 6s will still be around for a while. So the new cars will actually bring some variety to New Haven Line equipment. I wonder if the M-8 order will include any bar-cars. |

Overhead third rail was only in GCT , not in park Avenue tunnels. and was only usefull for switchers.New haven found out early that overhead third rail and diesel fuel and sparks do not mix well. and overhead third rail is useless for push pull. |

As Fred G. mentioned earlier, I like to looks of the M-8.Ever since seeing the first preliminary design options, while at a meeting of the Connecticut Commuter Council, I favored that look. It is reminiscent of the BMT Bluebirds. Lee |

They'll all get a non-Siemens new propulsion system on their overhaul so you have four to five years left to listen to them in person. |

New haven found out early that overhead third rail and diesel fuel and sparks do not mix well.Sounds like the diesels will have to go. No great loss, never should have been there to begin with. and overhead third rail is useless for push pull. Sure, cause there have been absolutely no improvements to the technology since 1904. The possibility of mounting a sensor and some sort of activation system to obviate the need for the engineer to ascertain his train's position relative to the gap and the overhead third rail is completely out of the question. No wait, that's exactly what the RWE's coal lines outside Köln do with their overhead lines and the supplementary power from the side when the locomotives are under the coal loading chutes. The trains can (but rarely do) operate pull-pull with continuous power and no action on the part of the engineer to raise of lower pantographs upon entering the loading area. ![]() No reason the same system, more than a decade old at this point, could not be used by a multivoltage locomotive in conjunction with overhead third rail to provide push-pull service into and out of NYP without fear of gapping out. |

No reason the same system, more than a decade old at this point, could not be used by a multivoltage locomotive in conjunction with overhead third rail to provide push-pull service into and out of NYP without fear of gapping outSure there is a reason. It's something the MTA would never spend money on. Never mind the fact that they ought to just have taken advantage of the extant loops at GCT. (Although considering the things they do spend money on, it's a wonder they don't rebuild the tunnels for catenary clearance anyhow, assuming it to be necessary.) |

Don't they understand that that flat, squared off front end is less aerodynamic and will require more power to maintain speed than if it had an M1/M3 style end? |

The EP-5 colours look great now it just needs a PA-1/FA-1 nose. It would only take a revision of the fibreglass(?) moulding before they crank out the rest of the order and the looks would sharpen up greatly. Right now it’s a mix of 30’s headlight surround and modern body end. Horizontal lights would be better too but that involves a few more bits. Another subtlety would be to use red in the Scotchlite tapes, for that matter they’re hardly needed on a crossingless line.M8 ![]() FA-1, nose a bit big and photo shine too strong in the nose curves but best pict I could find ![]() Bill |
