Time is running out for the R-40 Slants. After tonight just 34 left in service.

8 Going to scrap
4280-81 heading to storage for the museum collection.

Still looks like Mid-June for the last run

4250-51 should, not 4280-81. This set (originally 4350-51) was the first delivered in 1967 and entered service January 1968.

The R46 as a replacement is a huge step up
the R44's aint S**T
Those are falling apart slowly but surely
not to go off topic but noticed that Jamaica is starting to store the 160's on the QB Express tracks at night
they are trying their hardest not to have them parked the the station (Union Tkpe) over night
i wonder how long this will last lol

Well, it appears now that my last ever ride on a Slant was in July 1999 (on the L of all lines), since I didn't even see one, let alone ride one last month. At least I had that one, I don't think I ever rode a post-GOH R-38 (and I'm not 100% sure I ever rode one going back to the 70s, though I probably did).

Riding the R40 Slants on the A last weekend was a treat even though the A was local - back when I first began railfanning the NYC subway in the early 1980s, the Slants were a mainstay on the A train. I've been fortunate enough over the years to also ride Slants on the B (both via the West End and the Brighton line), L, M (the post 9/11 service to Coney Island), N, Q (the 6th Ave variation and the Broadway service), QB and W.

The only 'modern' B Division line I've NEVER seen the Slants on would be the J/Z, V and the Shuttle; and never on the EE, HH or 'original' K/KK in their existences. In my memory, they ran as follows:

A) 1977-84; 2008-09
AA/K) On occasion approx 1982-88
B) 1981-97; 2004-09
C/CC) Signed as such on midday Rock Park Shuttle 1976-79; once on weekend in 1990
D) Once in 1985 prior to Manny B Southside shutdown; on occasion on 'yellow' branch 1986-87
E/F) 1968-77
GG) Summer 1977 with black bullets (instead of green) on roll maps and exterior signs
L) 1990-2001
M) On occasion approx 1990-91; Broadway-Myrtle segment during summer 1999 Willy B closure. Not sure about midday Nassau shuttle or peak Nassau-West End.
N) 1990-2007
Q) 1997-2004
R) On occasion 1985-86 prior to Queens terminal switch.

I didn't keep track of the cars I rode during my '94 visit, I did keep track in '99, but no longer have the paper on which I wrote them down :( (the only one I remember from 99 is 9246 on the 4, my last mainline Redbird!)

Hi f179dj,
Good old 5th Avenue Depot. From August '77 to August '78 it was my reporting point. Before that a year at Ulmer Park. Worked the B63 on the PMs. Definitly put in a lot of seat time. When I was taken off the trains, drilling in the IRT, in August of '76 I bitched about going to the busses relentlessly. But after all was said and done it was a pretty descent experience. The only thing I missed was being able to operate the R9s in service (by the time I went back the R9s were gone) and I still miss that loss today.
Best wishes,
Bob

Sorry to hear that ... about the only good part of my stay there was running the arnines ... so completely different from SMEEs on the handle action, so cooperative in coast ... and although it's not quite the same, you can still get a little giggle time in at Branford once 1689 is back in operation ... after 30 years, a run or three back and forth did it for me all over again. :)

I was glad to get my last rides on the slants and also get a small video tape of one of the last slants last week at Lefferts with my fiancee.

The lines I've ridden the slants on have always been the B, Q and occasionally the D going to and from chinatown from West 4th St.

I'm glad they were moved to the A so we can say goodbye to each other one last time :(

They were very unique. I'm glad they saved 2 cars for the transit museum along with the R-38. I can't wait till they appear as an exhibit at the transit museum. Gonna take plenty of pictures when that day comes :D

R.I.P. R-40 Slants. Thank you for the unique experience and rides for all these years from the A to the B, D, Q and back to the A again :)

Last I heard, 1689 was down for motor work. But 5466 (LoV) is running, and that's the same ME23 and all if you're in need of a "now" fix. Supposedly Unca Jeff and Vic are close to perhaps getting it up and running, otherwise it'll be next year as Unca vic wants to get it in the barn for the winter before something else takes its spot ...

But yeah, after 30 years away from them, handle time really did it for me a couple of years ago. I'm all set. :)

I qualified on the 40's when they were new and sadly never got to run them in revenue because at the time they were only out of Jamaica and I worked the D. But I *really* liked the way they handled and responded while I was in school car ...

There haven't been too many lines that I've ridden the slants on.

Alice/Abbott
Barney/Betty/Bob
Fred
Larry
Norton
Queasy (both orange and yellow diamond)

I may have ridden on a yellow D in October of 1987 when the B and D were split into IND and BMT sections.

I remember when they were brand new. Only rode on them once back then, on a Fred from 34th to 42nd and then only because my sister, who is definitely not a subway buff, liked them and wanted to ride in one.

My most memorable slant ride was on an Alice up CPW n/b on Easter Subday in 1978. That train RIPPED past each of those local stops; we had to be doing 45-50 mph. They were a worthy successor to the immortal R-10s.

Yeah, the arnines were definitely one of the joys of the old teeyay ... when you laid them up at the end of the day, you KNEW you'd earned your check. :)

I rode the Slants on the A B C N Q and W Lines. On top of those lines I mentioned, I remember seeing Slants on the L and M.
