Posted by Train Man Paul : Metro-North's Best Conductor FOR ALL 3 LINES!!! on Tue May 26 15:23:38 2009 Taken on 05/20/2009, a little visit to Bound Brook, NJ landed me a nice afternoon of railfanning with some nice catches on the NJT RVL plus up close and personal with some ES40DC GEVOs on NS 65J (Trash), plus two videos, NS 36G, and NS 65J departing CP BOUND BROOK, though upon the departure of 65J, my camera died due to not being charged in a few days!! (:-p) Enjoy folks!!Track 1 westbound, Train #5439 to Raritan, PL42AC #4012 leading, Comet V Cab #6000 east end, smokin' it up as she chugs on off..... ![]() ![]() ![]() Views of the south side station building from Track 1 @ Bound Brook..... ![]() Further away view, also showing CSAO Bound Brook Yard, chock fulla' hoppers!!..... ![]() Eastward homeballs guarding CP BROOK east of the station, Tracks 1 and 2 (left to right respectively, looks like Safetran Systems Model V-20R Tri-Light Color signals)..... ![]() And for goodness sakes, people...... ![]() READ AND UNDERSTAND AND FOLLOW THE SIGN!! While heading under the underpass to reach the Track 2 side, Train 5448 east to Newark sneaks in (run run little man, and catch this bastard!!!.....) ![]() ![]() OK to depart, "Clear" signal, Track 2 CP BROOK..... ![]() ![]() ![]() More signage and station shots at the station..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Manual, hand thrown switch (manual lock), governing the RVL/Lehigh Line connecting track and the entrance to Bound Brook Yard (CSAO)..... ![]() Bound Brook Yard, plus connecting track to the CSAO Lehigh Line via CP BOUND BROOK..... ![]() RVL Train 5441 to Raritan west on Track 1 RVL, PL42AC 4031 leading, Multi-Level Cab #7037 trailing, passing thru CP BROOK and arriving at Bound Brook while NS 65J "Da Trash" creeps up to CP BOUND BROOK on Track 1 on the CSAO Lehigh Line, lead by GE ES40DC GEVOs 7598 and 7558 leading the stink..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() (It was at this point I struck up conversations with the crew, engineer Tom and conductor Frank, which Frank stepped down to grab a meal at one of the local eateries at Bound Brook while CR North Jersey Dispatcher held 65J at CP BOUND BROOK for 2 moves, CSAO/NS Local MA02....Manville Yard, servicing Lehigh Line/RVL sidings, and serving Port Reading Secondary sidings...and a short, massively overpowered NS 36G, former in shots crossing over to the Port Reading Secondary at CP BOUND BROOK and the latter in the included video, and out of respect for the crew, their photos were not taken. After some railfan/railroader chat, Frank went on his way as Tom stayed aboard) UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH THE THOROUGHBRED!! :-)..... ![]() ![]() ![]() While maintaining at a distance my vigilant guard of 65J's power, RVL Train 5743 to High Bridge, PL42AC #4029 and FINALLY some good ol' single level Comets, arrives on Track 1..... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Clattering eastward thru CP BOUND BROOK, onto the Port Reading Secondary, is CSAO/NS Local MA02 out of Manville Yard, with some cars for the Port Reading Secondary Line industries, lead by a dual set of NS GP40-2s..... ![]() ![]() ![]() Video time!! Watch in HD for best view!! NS 36G eastbound, Track 2, to Oak Island Yard, Newark NJ with massive overpowering of C40-9W 9465 and C40-8W #8336, with a whopping, bridge stressing, rail wearing 12 CARS!! (Funny how a main liner like 36G is shorter than a local, MA02!! Though, 36G does do set offs and pickups at Manville Yard)...... Now, though sadly my camera died before 65J completely left CP BOUND BROOK behind, 65J and her mighty GEVO ES40DC big mommas roars west from CP BOUND BROOK on an "Approach" signal (steady yellow over red, NORAC Rule 285), as given by the CSAO North Jersey Dispatcher..... I hope you all enjoyed!! :-) "Railroading is not just a career, it's a lifestyle!!" |

And hey, you are most welcome!! :-) I still say this station, pound for pound, is the best railfan spot in the Tri-State area!! If you like a good freight flow, Wednesday thru Saturday, is best!! |

I don't know-I'm more partial to Union and Roselle, but I do concede that this spot sees more action.Last time I did BB, I saw one freight. It had an NS C39-8, a CSX CW, and a CR spartan cab unit. Lashup of the century, and as I go to hit the shutter. BEEP BEEP BEEP Low Batt. FML. |

You must have visited on a Monday or Tuesday. Sometimes the action can be wholly CSX, sometimes wholly NS, a smixxin' of both, or sometimes the Lehigh can be deathly quiet with massive lulls. The Port Reading Secondary is a relief valve into Oak Island, Kearny, E-Port (Elizabeth) and the Port Of Newark whenever the Lehigh gets backed up, but since the double track went into service last year, massive backups have eased, but traffic has increased. Also, late in the evening, look for a CP Rail trains 266/265 (last known symbol numbers, though I hear they might have been changed to 565/566) which also visits Oak Island Yard from Binghamton |

That would probably explain it, because when I went to Roselle, I went for an AM morning rush. 4 freights and two more waiting when I was going back to Newark. Plus all the PL42 one could muster. But, I must admit, I got lucky last time I went, because the AM rush was ALL EMD. Not an Alstom in sight, and the GEs hadn't even hit the property yet. So, that was nice. That day has the only picture I ever U/L'ed to NYCsubway. |
