That'd be even worse! At least with the super express on the PW it'd be a one seat ride. Now you wanna transfer at Bayside AND have a slower ride? No thanks

I've been on 10 car Far Rock trains, and 8 car trains from other lines out of Penn.

I'm thinking they're there to meet demand for commutes to Hofstra University straight from the city. Both trains are early and both arrive in Hempstead before 8 AM.

NYP isn't a limiting factor? Are you kidding? NYP is the biggest limiting factor on the entire RR for peak direction travel. Yes, the single track from Great Neck to PW would have to be addressed, but to ignore NYPs capacity issues to just idiotic.

There's the MOW yard just east of Bayside already. I always said that there should be a full time extended city-zone ticket service with frequent trains to Bayside, and let them layover in the MOW yard.

Agreed. There's plenty of space for it as well. Even if you wanted to double track all the way from Plandome to PW it would be possible. I go off roading all the time along the tracks between the two stations, it's all trees and a creek.

There's plenty of train service to meet PW demand west of Great Neck. Unfortunately it cannot run out to PW to meet the demand east of Great Neck. There's no need to increase service on the line in general, there's a need to allow the trains which are forced to end at Great Neck to continue east to serve Manhasset and PW itself.

That's a very short yard, though - not adequate for 850' long trains at all as I am recalling it.

LIRR doesn't seem to run 4-car EMU trains in service anymore, at least since the M7s got in, and maybe well before that; I've been on a 6 car peak train on the branch and that wasn't pretty. There's no third rail too; I don't know whether you could add it without making adjustments at the substation or not.

Plus the configuration of BAY makes it very awkward move. Tk 2 handles e/b service, and for an e/b terminating at Bayside, it's a reverse move that's going to tie up service on the entire branch.

Considering all of these changes' cost (third rail, maybe extend ASC, re-do BAY, extend tracks), it's worth exploring if it's not just more bang for the buck to build a new yard east of BAY.

"I am still at a loss to explain why that morning diesel from Speonk stops at Kew Gardens. "

Perhaps the only slot available for that train is on the local track right behind another local, so it may as well stop.

It might be the train order headed w/b from JAY. For some reason, the train is assigned to tk 3, and it might as well take dwell time at Kew Gardens?

Does anyone know which train is assigned to tk 3 as that train's leader?

I was actually stating for NYCTA to run with the LIRR on the same tracks. In other words, the LIRR keeps going to NYP for the commuters, and NYCTA runs into 63rd Street Upper Level. Of course, the FRA would never allow that...

Still, if somebody put a gun to my head, the PW Line of all the LIRR lines has the most interesting potential to be a "subway" line since it's basically isolated from the rest of the LIRR and has no freight service. It would be nice if NYCTA could aim for a 3 door 2 X 2 with plush seating set up with 80 mph MAS and 3.0 mph/s for said service...

If they are going to do that, they may as well leave it the LIRR. Why should the MTA take over the line, provide a service likke that, and reduce the fare on the line from LIRR fares to subway fares?

It's that board's "76th St", meaning there's no way to answer it which will end any debate. These threads usually descend into flamefests with one person suggesting a reason and others riduculing it.

I once suggested that it might be a courtesy train for LIRR employees headed to Arch St. in the morning that live near Kew Gardens.

RR.net has strict moderators. I once had a post removed when I dared to suggest that the Jews that live in Monsey would fight any restoration of service on the Pascack Valley line between Spring Valley and Suffern. I might be thought of as anti-Semitic, or some other stuff.

And forget discussing photography stuff. Remember that video I posted of an NJT engineer lecturing a photographer? The thread it was posted to on RR.net was locked within an hour.

Why Kew Gardens and not Forest Hills?

Most LIC/HPA diesels use the eastbound express track anyway, and it's hardly at capacity.
