It looks like they’re rebuilding something: the brickwork on top of the steel supports looks new.I think the facade is great, just wish that they had put a clock in the spire (I’m a believer in public clocks). |

And some nice redecoration work!'BMT Lines' sounds like an anachronism to me these days; not only because the BMT ceased to exist more than 50 years ago, but also because most of the lines now terminating at Stillwell are former IND lines...;-) |

I could ask you the same question in reverse: why would 'down there' rule the day? Nowhere have I advocated the replacement of the BMT sign by an IND one. But since - first of all - the BMT and the IND do not exist anymore and - secondly - former BMT and IND lines were physically connected to each other via the Chrystie St. connector (1967), mentioning the BMT only at the facade of Stillwell Terminal is purely nostalgic. That's all I wanted to say. |

The BMT (aka B2 Division) still lives on, and all of the lines that run to Coney Island are in it.I know you don't live in New York, and I don't know if you've ridden the system, but the distinction between IND and BMT is still apparent to the seasoned rider, even with few signs giving either acronym. |

Yes, I have ridden the system, but only within Manhattan. That was in 2000. I would really love to come back and ride the entire system, but raising the money for the trip is the first issue I'll have to tackle... |

In 1954, each route was in a single division. The F had to be in one or the other, and since most of the route is IND, and the south end of the route doesn't share any trackage with anything else, IND was picked for the whole thing. That all changed in 1967. It's now perfectly permissible for a single route to cross between divisions, so for all intents and purposes, the F crosses between IND (B2) and BMT (B1). |

The entire Culver line from Ditmas south was transferred to IND control in 1954. Today, the designation is pointless. But before 1967, it was entirely IND in name and operation. |

In operation, not since 1954. In 1954, the entire line was transferred to IND control, back when the divisions were run by seperate crews. Every map post-1954/pre Chrystie will show the Culver line as part of the IND division. |

A southbound Q went BIE at Ocean Parkway. It appears that its follower crossed to the express at Brighton Beach, so the B I was on couldn't fill that pocket. (That still doesn't explain why we couldn't fill it after service went back to normal on the local track. Could someone please buy several 3-packs of yellow lights for Sheepshead Bay!) |

Since the divisions are no longer seperatley operated, it doesn't mean anything outside a historical context. In that context, the Liberty Ave. el is also BMT. |

If that's the case, the dispatcher should have held B trains more often at Kings Highway for about less than a minute. This reduces the dwell time at Sheepshead Bay to some extent. |

I've taught three math courses, and it's highly unlikely that you'd find yourself taking more than two of them, so my personal point of view is very limited. You'd probably get more out of asking a student or alum (there are at least three who regularly post to this board). |

Its follower crosses to A3 north of Brighton and continues south to Stillwell. Even assuming a B already on A4, you just need to wait for the Q to pull out of Brighton before pulling in - should take slightly less than a minute. Or am I missing something? |

I had the same question.Perhaps the T/D (or whoever makes these decisions) wanted to keep A3 clear for following Q's. I'm not sure why -- the train at Ocean Parkway started moving right around when the first B left the terminal. I will say, this is the first time I've ever been on a B that's passed a Q just south of Sheepshead Bay -- but that Q and its follower then passed us before we moved any further. Holding lights, please! Or just install a southbound-only express-only Neptune Avenue station -- yeah, it's too close to the stations in either direction, but if the train's going to stop there anyway, passengers might as well be able to get off. |
