I have no idea either. They are creating a huge reef in the middle of the ocean and I have no clue whether or not this will any chain effect in other places. We humans have a long history of not thinking these things all the way through when we try and manipulate local ecosystems/environments. We're not talking one rail car or a few tires. We're talking over a thousand subway cars.

And those tires are a good example. I don't think that tires are used anymore because they do more harm than good. From wiki:

This project (Osborne Reef) is not the only one of its nature to fail; Indonesia and Malaysia mounted enormous tire-reef programs in the 1980s and are now seeing the ramifications of the failure of tire reefs, from littered beaches to reef destruction.[4] Jack Sobel, The Ocean Conservancy's director of strategic conservation said in a 2002 interview that "I don't know of any cases where there's been a success with tire reefs." That year, The Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup removed 11,956 tires from beaches all over the world.[3]

I saw the website.

Not everything they do is bogus. For example, there's nothing wrong with educating people not to dump their motor oil in the storm drain or pestering municipalities to upgrades sewage treatment plants so overflows don't occur as frequently. And certainly organizing people to pull debris out of streams is worthwhile (I've done that at Oakland Lake in Bayside).

But if they're bellyaching about reefed subway cars, they're misdirected at the very least.

I don't necessarily agree the tires are the best reef (although they did completely increase fish life in the areas where they are). The problem with tires is that they don't disintergrate, so yes, I can see a problem, especially if the reef begins to dislodge, and random tires float away.
As for metal subway cars, they do disappear - eventually, and so long as the chemicals like oil, etc are removed, there aren't long term effects.

Today's (2/8) Star Ledger story.

It seems to be only a problem on the stainless cars and not the R36s (although the K-cars have been in much worse shape). Note references to "signifcant damage" and "collapse". Even the Redbirds as mentioned still are as good as sunk.

I understand what you and John have said, but there are photos of some of the cars that landed upside down on nycsubway.org, and those are the ones that are flat for whatever reason.

My public high school required 4 years of math and 4 years of science.

Then again, it wasnt your average NYC public school...

Agreed.

If it were up to you, how many years of math and science (and what combination of physical/biological science) would you require? Assume a 4 year high school.

New YORK STATE now requires 1 year of integrated algebra and 1 year of geometry for graduation

This is beyond what many lower functioning can handle. We need vocational training for many students as a way to get people into productive lifes.

Most of the 1st year high school work is now done in middle school.

Well- I cant say that I am not a bit biased, but I think that Math and Science should be mandatory for all years of high school, much like english and history are(at least, I think they are.)

I take issue with any attempt to consider such subjects as lesser requirements.
But then again... this comes from someone who has always been fairly science heavy in my education.
