12 consists of 60 foot cars will normally be needed for A service. Since not all of the slants have migrated over from Coney Island, R-38s will be used only to supliment A service - for a while. Then it's "GLUG, GLUG, Glug" for them.

So what happens with the A? Will it retain some of the 40s? It needs more than 44s to maintain its required level of service.

That is, except for the ONE AND ONLY TIME I rode on a re-routed R44 labeled as a C......the LCD's were all messed up too, not reading "168th St Mahtn" or whatever it'd look like. That was probably back around 2001-2003 at West 4th.

Probably they needed a trainset for the (C) and there was no 60 footers available, so then voila !

I've always thought the Slants were most suited to express runs. The slant front itself and the noise they make might have something to do with it. Also, as a little guy, I remember them on the E and F, On Queens Blvd...which, without all the timers, is a great express run.

Seeing them on the N (when it was local in Manhattan) seemed so sad, like they were just straining at the bit to get going, especially NB between Cortlandt and Canal St.

At least the last of them are finishing up their careers where I feel they belong- on IND express runs.

When they were on the E and F back in the day they were fast because they were new. By the time you rode them on the N the field shunting was removed in reaction to the Willy B wreck which made their top speed slower. NYCT's philosophy seems to be if they go slower, less wear and tear. They point to other systems to get ideas. But they do this to the point to whatever suits them. Anybody here who has never made the trek to Philadelphia is missing a real treat. You get fast accelleration and good top speed on both the Market-Frankford and Broad St. lines. They put us to shame. And this dirty old man thinks the automated female announcer on the Broad St. line is one hot babe! Love to see what she looks like!

Based on what was done in the past on the J/Z/M/L lines, and already on the A, the 40M's will be mixed in service with the 42's. To make life easier for the yardmasters, they'll likely mix the Pitkin 42's with the 207 42's along with the 40M's and take each yard will take theirs off when inspections are due. There should be enough of these to keep them on the C with left overs to the A. but it will be up to RTO is they want the slants to be prioritized on the C or not. It's up to wherever the supers tell the yardmasters where to run them. We'll all have an idea Monday. Personally I'm hoping the slants stay on the A with the C getting the mods and 42's but it's not up to me. But I wish!

There used to be PM rush hour gap trains staged throughout the system, maybe 10 years ago. Most of the time the R44 gap at 72nd St. middle would wind up on the A so you would never know it was, but occasionally it wound up on the C. Same thing for the R46 gap, it wound up on the B or D sometimes. Forgot where these were staged (I think one was at 57/7 in the back).

A harmonica which can take pics. Gives you something to do when locked up for taking pictures of trains.

Good point. R10's, R27's, R30's, R32's, R38's...I don't think the C has seen trains with bullets since the R46 truck fiasco 27 years ago!

I wonder why the TA is changing their C/R position policy regarding 8 car R-40/42s. Since new C/R boards had to be installe anyhow why didn't the TA just keep the 3 south 5 north configuration on all lines? It seems to go back to the old BMT days on the steels when C/Rs operated from the rear section in both directions. By the time I started as a C/R, the TA changed operating procedure so that the C/Rs on steels operated from the south section at all times.

There are some considerations that were in play that would not really be of interest to most here. If you want the reasons, you can e-mail me.
