The slant front itself and the noise they make might have something to do with it. Also, as a little guy, I remember them on the E and F, On Queens Blvd...which, without all the timers, is a great express run. Seeing them on the N (when it was local in Manhattan) seemed so sad, like they were just straining at the bit to get going, especially NB between Cortlandt and Canal St. At least the last of them are finishing up their careers where I feel they belong- on IND express runs.
