WFIL, like a lot of once major AM stations fell on tough times in the past 15-20 years. As Selkirk can personally atest, the old 1130 in NYC ain't what it used to be, either. :-) He and I both worked there (at different times). The truth is that WFIL has been more successful financially since the inception of the religious format in 1994, than at any time since the oldies format in the early & mid eighties. Country bombed, soft music did too, and so did its simulcast with WAEZ (now B-101). The important thing to remember is that radio is, first and foremost, a business. Whether or not one likes a format, be it religion or anything else, the questions are, "Does a station make a profit? Does it serve it's stockholders? And, most importantly, does it serve the public?" If one accepts the premise that all formats are valid, as long as ratings and research indicate there is an audience and economic base for it, then WFIL qualifies as "successful." Is WFIL what it once was in terms of prestige? Definitely not. Does it make good money? Most definitely. From my perspective as its chief engineer - as well as its sister station in Philly, WNTP (another ex-bigtimer WIBG) format is immaterial. Engineering is engineering pretty much under any format. I've worked CHR, Alternative, Talk, Religion, Classical, Jazz, Top 40, and other formats. And I can say that about the only thing that changes from format to format is how the audio is processed for a particular format. In engineering the goal is the same, no matter what the station: keep it on the air, provide the tools programming and sales need to do their job, and make sure it sounds good technically. And that's true for AM or FM. |

That is definitely true, Fishbowl.Another employee and I have managed to save a lot of old memorabilia from both WFIL and WIBG in the past several years (much of which has appeared on the Famous 56 website -- which is a joy to browse). For instance, I have the complete masters of old PAMS jingles from WIBG, and most from WFIL. They were actually going to trash a lot of the stuff! Selkirk might also be interested in knowing that I was able to save a lot of memorabilia from WNEW when Bloomberg took over, including a complete set of blueprints for the Madison Ave. studios. Again, a lot of stuff was being trashed. One thing we did do before WNEW-AM passed into history was to donate the master tapes of a lot great programming material to the Museum of Radio and Television including a lot of old Martin Block material, and some of the great interviews that William B. Williams did with Sinatra and others. (I made copies of a lot of that stuff for my own personal archives before it left the building in 1992). |

I'm actually a little young to appreciate the format of the old WNEW-AM, and since I grew up in Brooklyn I didn't get to hear WFIL or WIBG that often. I was more of a WCAU-FM (Hot Hits) person, since that's what was on when I was old enough to travel on my own.I now live in Flemington, N.J.. Which is a shame knowing what was on the radio dial here 25-35 years ago. :-( |

That *is* what it's all about ... 0.7 volts P-P audio into 600 ohms, twice, 100 IRE with only one burst on the back porch, 7.5 IRE of setup and CBS white with clipping. Content optional. To show you how long *I* was at it, FCC P1-2-43516 signed by Jim Quello and Alex Zimny with Radar and Ship endorsements, 60WPM code. List of stations I built way too long. Wow ... this is really going off topic now, but did ya find Grandma Allison's undies behind the racks? Heh. And yeah, remember Madison well. I was there in the middle of the move to Fifth when both studios were lit and it was a call-ahead to figure out what was going to be hot any given night. :)I'd LOVE to see the old floorplan again, just to show it to the wife. Took her to Fifth many years ago when my buddy Al Bernstein was doing a show and showed her the (ahem) "rack." Hahahahaha. And of course Klavan with "Mr. Nad is here, the coordinator of interrelations." (grin) Lotta good stuff went on there. I was originally hired by Mitch Katz in engineering, but ended up "golden throating" my way over to vacation relief ... and of course, kept Zacherle in good hash. Heh. |

I never met any of the actors of the movie but I can say I saw the shooting of one of the scenes from my classroom window at Pace U. by City Hall. It was the patrol cars speeding up Broad Street with the money. This was before the accident. They did a number of takes all afternoon so I don't know which take I saw made the movie. |

I used to pick up FIL in Brooklyn, but it was a struggle to null out WMCA sometimes. When my Uncle Abe gave me his old Grundig Majestic multiband tube radio in the mid 70's, I even pulled in WARM from Scranton (AM 590) with no problem in the daytime.Interestingly, I met two kids in my high school in Brooklyn who were into Philly radio without my influence. One kid listened to FIL in his house near the 18th Ave stop of the Culver Line, and another kid was a big fan of Bruce Eric Smallwood, a newsman on 950 WPEN. |

I remember WNEW-AM, although I didn't listen to it much. I stayed away from WABC because of a DJ (last name Ingraham) I didn't care for. WJRZ (later WWDJ) was what I listened to most often - mainly because it was the Mets' flagship station before WHN took over. |

I would've asked him about what it was like working with Carroll O'Connor on "All in the Family."For those who don't know, he was in a classic episode where Archie gets stuck in an elevator while trying to deliver an insurance payment check, while Edith, Meathead and Gloria are waiting for him in a nearby restaurant to celebrate Edith's birthday. It was one of my dad's all time favorite episodes, and mine too. Archie was stuck in the elevator with four other people, three of whom were played by talented actors: a flaky, nervous white woman (played by the late Eileen Brennan), a black businessman (played by Roscoe Lee Browne) and the building's janitor (Elizondo) and his very pregnant wife. |
