Staten Islanders have to walk further for the R/W & 4/5 and there's no complaints.I see the new SF entrance almost everyday and it is RIGHT THERE within a few steps of the terminal. |

Why would anyone complain about how it's always been? How is that even relevant? Can you stick to the discussion about how the location of the new SF subway terminal is just one of many reasons why the new terminal is not automatically superior to the old terminal. |

No need to fumigate the trains at the Green then. But one reason I've heard given for why the loop is "no passengers" has to do with 5 trains sitting for longer periods of time there than the 6 in the City Hall loop. |

Actually, the new entrance to the station will be on board the boat.A watertight connection attaches to the hull of the boat, and people use a fire pole to drop right down onto the subway platform. What you guys seem to be neglecting is that the current entrance is superior to the future entrance in terms of location. Most design professionals would agree that doing this is a step backwards. Yes, there are other aspects of the station that are an improvement, but entrance location is not one of them. The issue of whether or not the location is worse is a fact, not an opinion. |

Aside from the entrance being a couple more steps away, how ELSE is the new terminal inferior? The new terminal allows platforming of 10 cars. That's a plus. The new terminal allows two trains to relay. That's a plus. The new terminal is an ACTUAL TERMINAL. That's a plus. The new terminal is ADA. That's a plus. The new terminal will supposedly handle crowding levels much better, making it easier to get in and out of the station. That's a plus. The new terminal doesn't have gap fillers to break down and cause the station to go out of service. That's a huge plus. Because of these factors, there's no need to hold trains at Chambers St in order to get the trains back on schedule, nor is there a need to stop and hold at EVERY station south of 14th St to let people walk up to the first 5 cars. That's a huge plus. The new terminal will eventually have an in-system connection to Whitehall St, which gives Brooklyn riders a much easier transfer to the 1 train. That's a huge plus. So what are the other cons of the new terminal, and how do they over-shadow these pros? |

OK, but this means that in terms of portal accessibility to the Ferry terminal, the 'temp' setup was better.Personally, I don't think a little walking hurt anyone, but the fact is: moving the terminal entrance further away is a bad thing. When the new Ferry Terminal was in the design stage, DOT asked if there was any plans to redesign South Ferry that Transit was working on. When they were told "No" (amidst great snickering on the part of Transit), the decision was made to incorporate the current station into the Terminal building for convenience. The entrance to Whitehall Station would be accessed by a roofed over (no walls) walkway, the sweep of which was designed into the Terminal. With the onslaught of silly designing, all the money DOT spent on the South Ferry Station entrance is wasted, the walkway to Whitehall had to be redesigned (since that entrance moved), while Transit propagated the concept that new terminal station, which is deeper and farther from the Ferry, is in fact closer that the current one. |

I don't wanna sound like an egomaniac, but I design buildings for a living, and in fact, In school I took a class on transportation architecture. Virtually ANY design professional would tell you the exact same thing. Now, I'm not saying that this fact makes the new SF terminal a failure, but I am saying that it is one aspect of the new terminal that is inferior to what presently exists.
