NYC Transit TENS website- pictures wanted |
|
Posted by TSS on Wed Oct 8 13:20:02 2008 Hi all,I work for NYC Transit and am responsible for updating the RTO portion of the TENS website. I found out that the subway pictures page is one of the most visited sites and on more than one occassion was asked to update the pictures more often. To do that, I would like your help. I am asking for people to please send me pictures they have taken of the NYC subway system, so that I can post them on the NYCT TENS website. Of course, I would give you full credit for the pictures. Most of the employees enjoy vintage photos or unique photos of the subway. You can send them to rfhom@hotmail.com I would like to thank everyone for taking the time to read this posting. Sincerely, TSS |

(I assume TENS is an employee intranet site, right?)So let me understand this, and this is not directed at you personally. The same agency that's been making it tough for we hobbyists to take pictures, even though it's legal, is now asking for us to provide it with pictures because "the subway pictures page [on TENS] is one of the most visited sites" ... and the same transit employees who are trained to "bang us in" because they are taught that picture taking is considered a suspicious activity also "enjoy vintage photos or unique photos of the subway"? Does anyone else see the irony in this? How about asking NYC Transit to be a little more understanding of we hobbyists who like to take pictures of trains first, and then ask the hobby groups for help? --Mark |

And it'd also save him countless hours of HTML and JAVA if he were to just provide a compiled list of LINKS to the photographers' respective sites (rather than having us SUBMIT pictures) to a root wherein otherwise we're "not allowed to take" pictures. |

Based on personal experience, the boys at work like the older pictures most of all. Y'know, pictures from the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc. Nothing wakes up a dead crew room like a picture of a freshly delivered R-40 with blue stripe and huge roll sign. They don't care much for current pictures...they work it every day.I personally like the page that has all the black and white photos of life in the olden days, though not necessarily transit related. |

Left this thread alone, because I know the "photogs" love rubbing the poor intern in charge of "da company paper" nose in it all ... but as someone who did the 70's with handles and keys, and TOOLS, one of the FEW things I enjoy in looking at photos here, and on Dave's place is OLDER stuff than the arnines, wherever they happen to be. Riding the old B&O on SIRT, Lo, Hi, and jalopy Vees on the AyeArTee (missed the MUDC's since I came along in 1950 myself) is the kind of photos *I* like myself ... SEEN all the rest, operated many. :)I have enough "keepsake photos" to build BVE ... but like many others, I'm into the stuff they DIDN'T qualify me on for schoolcar ... but then again, having tried to operate gate cars in a museum, amd I *ever* grateful I never had to run "reversed stands" Q gate cars on the Myrt, nor do C division with them. Reversed stands are UNNATURAL, and having PERSONALLY operated 143's (which I *hated* with the windshield wiper on the side to operate, and COLD gray metal to lay your arm on whilst doing so) they're even MORE unnatural! I'm an old Arnine/R32 guy (those are what I ran most on the D) it was hard enough remembering "THIS one is NOT a SMEE!" heh. But what came before I got "appointed" was even MORE a trip to check out, especially those RARE "undercar" and "truck differences and "maple with flag" between the axles variations, that I *still* enjoy "show me what I ain't SEEN! :) You, and the rest of 100 are not alone in that. Unfortunately I wasn't taking many pictures back then. Any pictures I have from the 60's and 70's would be from my collection and not copyrights that I control. I do have pics from fantrips back in the 70's but they are all on slides (gasp! FILM - what's that!!!) that are now gathering dust in boxes. I keep saying that someday I will buy a proper scanner but I keep finding other things to do with the money...As for my recent pics - I'm sure some might like them but most are not safe for work ;-) Although I do remember visiting Coney Island yard back in the mid 1970's - the tower was wallpapered in Playboy bunnies - how times have changed.... As for the photography issue - I guess it just goes to show how bitter and angry everyone is over the issue. It isn't just here - if you read some of the other photo sites and Flickr you will see how the relationship between authorities of all kinds (management, private security, TSA, police) and photographers has soured. The mistrust runs deep... Unless there are incidents that are not being reported here or on Flickr the photography situation in the subway seems to be improving. Still it will take many incident-free months and perhaps even years until the relationship begins to thaw again. The situation is actually worse on the streets as private security guards seem to think it is their job to prevent photography of their buildings from public sidewalks (but I digress)... Many managements have misinterpreted the law that allows copyrights of architecture. They conveniently forget about the 17 USC 120(a) exemption for photography... |
