The signs were replaced with red signs but the odd font was retained. The orange cars are a historic scheme and are striking especially on a dull day.

Like the St Charles line in New Orleans, the Mattapan line should be declared a historical treasure. The last of a kind. The equipment, the "trolley suburbs," yes, even the "bounce" of those PCCs, all seem like something from a bygone era.

I'm delighted the line is still around, grateful to the local community for fighting to keep the line going (I know there were some iffy patches where it almost didn't survive) and glad you took the time to post the pix.

I spent 4 of the best years of my life in Boston (BC!!!) and I think that's when the rail bug bit me!

Is it really a "High Speed" Line? From the Videos I've seen on You Tube, they don't seem to be going over 35mph.

No, it's not that fast. IINM, it's called "High Speed" for the nature of the route: dedicated ROW, 2 tracks, stations rather than street corners, yet still running PCC cars.

Thanks Fred. They semed very slow on the You Tube Videos, though my friend rode the Dallas Cars in 1974 and said those things could move.

A "PCC" in general moves quite well.
It was designed to have better preformance then the bus of the time.

Guy, that is good service there. Or maybe you are upset there is still good transit somwhere? Those PCCs can FLY. Those are good machines, and there is no problem that they are still running, it is because they were well built machines.

Those are rebuilds though, don't they have wheelchair lifts too? or are those at the back?
I think they even have IGBT or some sort of computer control rather than resistors and cams.

Nice pics the MBTA blue line looks very interesting. Its also nice to see that MBTA still uses those great PCCs

"Yellow is for buses, and purple is for commuter rail, so those don't work."

The buses just happen to have a yellow line painted around the beltline. It's no different from the blue line used on NYCT buses. We have blue on the buses as well as blue for the A, C and E subway lines, LIRR's Port Jefferson Line and Metro-North's Harlem Line. There's no confusion between any of them.

Even on the MBTA maps, they use various colors other than yellow to depict the bus lines. Even the online PDF schedules aren't in yellow. Yellow certainly could work. Purple might be a different story because commuter rail is shown on the T's subway maps, in purple and the trains and station signs are painted in purple. So making a subway line purple, even the short Mattapan trolley, might cause some confusion. But not yellow.

Going from Mattapan to Ashmont prior to 1928 was slow street running along River St. and Dorchester Av. with a change of cars at Milton Carhouse. Compared to that a Type 5 on the High Speed Line was damn fast. The cars are about twice as fast as the substitute bus service.

I have a question in regard to this thread. This thread was opened up by me in January. Somehow a new Blue Line Train photo taken this month has found its way into the thread. Is this have something to do with rrpicturearchives? Did someone here insert the photo into the existing thread somehow?
