I was talking to someone who work down at Central Montreal Procurement department (CMP for shot). These are the guy who pay for everything that the TA need, from Toilet Papers to New Cars and so on. Well here a few thinks he told me.

1) The R179's are true and will be come in withing the next 5 to 6 years and will be 75 footer. They will replace R44, R46 and R68/A. The TA want all cars to be CBTC ready within the next 15 years.

2) CBTC will be going to the 7 Line next no big deal. But Queens Blvd will be after that with parts of the F in Brooklyn to follow. The CBTC system is work great, that all the problem they have on the L line right now is with older signal that need to get removed.

3) CBTC testing in car on the R160's will start something this Summer. They will pull one train at first to install the computer and other parts soon. It will start at Church Ave test tracks, then to the J line and final full testing on the L between train over night. Testing should last about 6 to 10 months.

4) The R62/a's will also be replaced with newer car, contract Number have not been set within the next 10 years. Some will be sooner for service on the 7 line, and when the IRT gets it CBTC system installed. R142/a's will get a upgraded when the time comes to fit them with the CBTC system.

5) The R142/a's will be getting a up greed with the FIND system soon. This will give the IRT the felxibilty they need to switch train between lines.

I know this guy well and he would not pull my legs and tell me this infomation just to do it.

Noooo... Just send the R62/68s to MK in Hornell and have them rebuilt in the 2010-14 Capital Program instead, for less cost.

Point 5 needs to get done ASAP, those one subway line route maps is so outdated technology. They are useless on the 2 and 5 lines, they need this badly.

Maybe they should also $pend money on installing the FIND system on the R143 that can go out of the L line.

On Points 1 & 4: Why scrap perfectly good cars? I'd say that they should be rebuilt to be CBTC-capable.

This brings up an interesting question:
What car fleet (other than demo/test trains) have been in service for the shortest period of time?

Also, the strip map on the #2 was outdated when it came out. The 7 Av Local stops are not there, though they do stop there at times, like how the #4 stops at the Eastern Pkwy and Lex Ave local stops.

Even the Redbird strip maps that were on the #2 had the local stops listed as night stops.

Some of what I've heard:

1. R179's: no decision has been made as of on yet re: 60' vs. 75'. Some are still definitely in favor of more 60' cars for standardization purposes. CBTC ready for all new cars (revenue or otherwise) has been standard since the R143's.
4. Yes there are new A division cars planned but not to replace the 62's. With Flushing CBTC, new cars will be needed but only to supplement the R142/R142A's that go to Corona to replace the 62's. These 62's will be reassigned to the mainline when this happens. The Corona R142/R142A's will also have to be rebuilt for CBTC.
5. I haven't heard anything about the FIND going into the 142's but they better be prepared to change more than the signs (remember it has to tie in with the rest of the communications system - it also needs much more power than a strip map). Given the amount of work that should be required, I doubt this will happen anytime soon. Maybe with the CBTC rebuild.

By the way, I'm guessing you mean CPM (Capital Programs) not CMP. CPM handles all the construction projects (including CBTC) but nothing car related. The Procurement department takes care of the cars (and the toilet paper!).

75 foot cars again? Once more, the TA needs reminding that 75 foot cars have longer loading/unloading times.

10 car train of 60 footers = 40 doors per side of train
8 car train of 75 foot cars = 32 doors per side of train.

The TA has known this since 1970. I understand the need to save $$ by ordering fewer cars, but the cost returns as energy & time expenses as delays build up during rush hours.

I was under the impression, also, that the TA was sticking with 60' cars as they can be used anywhere in the BMT/IND system. (I always thought 75' cars couldn't operate on the Eastern Division, but I could be wrong...)

Most R22's, R17's and R27's and all of the GE R16's were scrapped before reaching 30 years of service. None of the latter made it past 28 years of service, and that includes the years they were mothballed in the late 70's.

No one has demonstrated that they significantly increase dwell times anywhere, at least to the point of having to spend millions more to replace them with 60' cars.

Yeah; especially eing that the 68's had the provisions for CBTC equipment. 2500-3 even were testing with it, and you actually had an L job that reported to CIYD, and ran it in the southern division!

Imagine the 68's going on these barges, in what did he say, 6 years??

I also say remove the unused cabs, and perhaps new modern style wall panels, with the end walls getting glass panels to see into the next car.

That is because it was too costly to get most of those cars overhauled. According to them. Funny how the R-68/A if true, won't reach 30 as the cars they replaced the R-10's which reached 40 years. I guess the 68's are truely lemons!

All lines do not have the crush loading problems that made 60 foot better. So you will have new 60 ft cars for those lines that need more doors, and you can have some new 75 ft cars that will probably run on less packed lines where the benefit of less cars will outweigh the loading capacity issue.

One of the barriers to the longer car concept; passability between cars, was eliminated when they decided to ban passing through.

What overhaul? They won't ever need one.

My bad, but the reason these cars were scrapped without overhauls had more to do with the way they were abused through most of their lives. The R68's have been on an SMS program since they were first introduced. They will not need an overhaul because of SMS.

That's what's suspected, but I spotted an R142A strip map display sans strip map. Of course, having my camera with me, I took pictures of it.

Here's one that shows all but 2 of the light holes.

Try and count them. The local (2) has 61 stops in all.

We've been waiting for the R-142s on the 7 forever, but in a way the R-142/a on the 7 will be a horror, those cars suck in misty/light rain weather, they buck, moan, wheels lock, train slips, slides, you name it, it's done it. At least the R-62a have damn good brakes, in an outdoor line like the 7 those brakes are a godsend in those kinds of weather. I hope when/if the R-142/q go to the 7 they figure out a way to address that, or they should keep the 7 line SMEEs.

Also with the FIND system they need to organize the find system so much better, they program that in a way that at the top are the normal routes, normal southbound, normal northbound routes for the day then underneath that the various different routes for every line. You have to go through sometimes 20-25 different southbound options before you find the northbound route that the route uses 99% of the time. God help the D line crews when they get R-160s since the D has a god awful amount of reroutes it can go through.
