Peter Ehrlich and I did some railfanning yesterday. I figured he was spoiled by living in San Francisco, and he deserved some real east coast railfan photo harassment. Boston did not disappoint us. No images were deleated, and no arrests were made. We did, however become the talk of the Blue Line. Thankfully we met up with a former subchatter who happens to work the Blue Line as a station inspector. He helped to calm everyone's fears. Peter was yelled at by one Blue Line operator before we met up with the former subchatter, but all in all it was a fun day. Please enjoy some pictures.

Can you spot the railfan hiding in this photo?

So you were only yelled at by one Blue Line operator? That was the only incident? Impressive. I was yelled at by operators and two station inspectors. And one station inspector (on the Blue Line) came to my aid and fended off an angry operator. So who is this former SubChatter? You can email me if you like. Maybe he was who came to my aid in August?

Great shots! I love the Mattapan Line. Last time I rode was right before the 2006-07 shutdown. Looks like the Ashmont Station is completely different. Do the Mattapan cars load and unload on a new upper level platform?

And what's the T's current photo policy? On my last trip there in June 2006 I had to obtain a photo permit at the T's HQ. Not a problem, as I had arranged it ahead of time. I was challenged many times by T employees while I was taking photos but had the permit in hand. On the Blue Line it seemed that every T/O asked me for the permit. Guess it's because it passes Logan Airport.

Excellent photos, but the new station signs look terrible!

What were they thinking? First of all, the Mattapan line isn't at all part of the Green Line -- its only similarity is that it's a "light rail" line rather than a "heavy rail" line. Not to mention that it's depicted in red on the system map. And, of course, what's with the font?

Sorry for the rant, but I've always been an admirer of the MBTA's signage system and it's been deteriorating in recent years.

Fantabulous! :o)

My trip to Boston back in September went like this:

North & South Stations-no issues whatsoever.

Orange Line-1 round of questioning that lasted about 30 seconds.

Green B & C-see Orange Line report.

Green D Line-biggest issue of the trip. At the Reservoir stop, I was given the biz by an motorman. When I showed him this (see below), which I would carry with me if I was out there shootin' MBTA, his tone changed, but he persisted in questioning me. Maybe the Mo Vaughn Mets shirt didn't help, but the conversation ended with "once I leave, I don't care how many pictures you take".

SECURITY POLICY/PROCEDURE
# 2007-1
I. BACKGROUND
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (“MBTA”) has security and public relations interests in persons who wish to take photographic or video images on, in, or of MBTA property, vehicles, or employees. Although in most instances there is no particular harm involved in taking photographic or video images on, in, or of MBTA property, vehicles, or employees, intelligence indicates that persons who wish to target particular locations for terrorist purposes are likely to use photography as part of their pre-attack surveillance and planning. As such, the MBTA has not only an obligation to protect its customers and employees and deter and prevent terrorism, but also an inherent responsibility to regulate photography on, in, or of MBTA property, vehicles, or employees.
II. POLICY
In order to provide the highest level of security to its customers and employees, the MBTA requires that any person on or in MBTA property or vehicles taking non-commercial/personal use photographic or video images, including, but not limited to film, digital, or video recording (hereinafter referred to as “pictures”) of MBTA property, vehicles, or employees, must provide proper identification (see Part IV, Procedure) upon request of an MBTA Transit Police Officer or other MBTA Official.
Any person observed taking pictures on, in, or of MBTA property, vehicles, or employees who refuses to provide proper identification to an MBTA Transit Police Officer or other MBTA Official upon request; or any person observed taking pictures on, in, or of a restricted area (i.e. an area not open to the public) will be directed to stop taking pictures and will be subject to additional law enforcement action as appropriate.
Any person wishing to take pictures for any type of commercial purpose or use, (e.g., movies, commercials, trade publications, etc.) must first obtain a permit from the MBTA Marketing Department.
III. SCOPE
This policy is being issued by the Chief of Police under the authority granted him by the Board of Directors and the General Manager and applies to all employees, vendors, contractors, and all other persons on MBTA property or vehicles.
IV. PROCEDURE
Non-Commercial/Personal Use Photography
No permit is required for non-commercial/personal use pictures taken in public areas. However, any person taking pictures on, in, or of MBTA property, vehicles, or employees must provide proper identification* upon request of an MBTA Transit Police Officer or other MBTA Official. The MBTA Transit Police Officer or other MBTA Official may allow the person to take pictures at the specific location under the following conditions:
• the person provides proper identification;
• the circumstances indicate that the subject(s) of the picture(s) does/do not pose a security or safety threat or in any way cause disruption of service or operations of the MBTA; and
• the picture(s) is/are for personal or educational use only (e.g., tourist, railroad buff, student, artist, etc.).
Non-commercial photographers are prohibited from using tripods, monopods, wiring or any like equipment that may have an impact on the safety of customers or employees and are prohibited from interfering with the free flow of passengers or disrupting service in any manner.
*Photo identification that includes, at a minimum, name, address, and
date of birth.
Commercial Photography
Any person wishing to take pictures for any type of commercial purpose or use must first obtain a permit by filling out an application and submitting it to the MBTA Marketing Department, 2nd floor, room 2310, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116 (617-222-5568). Once issued, the permit will be valid for a specific location, date and time, which will be stated on the permit.
News Media Photographers
News media photographers who prominently display their Commonwealth of Massachusetts News Media Photographer identification card or News Photographer tri-card will be allowed to take pictures in the public areas on, in, or of MBTA property, vehicles or employees so long as they do not interfere with the free flow of passengers or disrupt service in any manner.
News media photographers are requested to make prior notification to the MBTA Public Affairs Office at 617-222-3302 and the MBTA Transit Police Department at 617-222-1212.
Please note: Officials should advise the appropriate Line Dispatcher when observing a news media photographer taking pictures on, in, or of MBTA property, vehicles, or employees. However, they do not need to request information from the persons(s) so long as the media credentials are prominently displayed.

News media photographers are not allowed inside any crime or incident scene without the permission of, and an escort provided by, the on-scene MBTA Transit Police Incident Commander or his/her designee.
V. EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES
MBTA Officials: Officials who observe a person taking pictures shall immediately notify the appropriate Line Dispatcher and inform the person of this policy. The Line Dispatcher will notify the MBTA Transit Police Dispatcher. If possible, the Official should obtain the identification information (name, address, date of birth, and any other appropriate information) while awaiting the police response. If the person refuses, the Official should ask the person to stop taking pictures and the Official should update the MBTA Transit Police Dispatcher.
If no MBTA Transit Police Officer is available to respond in a timely manner, the Official shall record the information on a report (standard statement) and forward the report before the end of the Official’s shift to his or her area Superintendent’s office. The Superintendent or Supervisor shall fax the report to the MBTA Transit Police Department Intelligence Unit. The fax number for the Intelligence Unit is 617-222-1036.
MBTA Marketing Department: The Marketing Department will forward all permit applications to the MBTA Transit Police Department Intelligence Unit. The Intelligence Unit will conduct a background and record check before authorizing the issuance of a permit. In addition, the Marketing Department will secure approval of the MBTA Operations and Safety Departments prior to the issuance of the permit. Once completed, the Marketing Department will issue the permit.

We were told not to photograph the Gray Line at SS. The Blue Line at Suffolk Downs. Peter was yelled at at Orient Heights. The Mattapan Line at Shady Grove by painters no less. We almost got into it at Bowdoin, but I asked the agent, who was about to rebuke us, about a former subchatter Boston T Party. The Bowdoin agent then helped us locate BTP. We met up with BTP at Airport where Peter did some photgraphing. No new Blue Line cars are operating yet.

I don't get it.

Sorry, for real.

Massive ROW, with old sagging streetcar wire running real PCC's, with a really wide ROW, and they're building that new overpass/station.

It seems unexpected, or werid for the US. Or something. It's just unusual in 2008.

Everything on that line [station signs, the cars] should be painted RED to match the fact that A-M is an extension of the Red Line.
Other than that, then the T should give Ashmont-Mattapan its own color [Yellow, Purple, even (yuck) Pink!]

Perhaps, but I don't think the rebranding is necessary. If anything, it would just lead to more confusion, what with having an isolated part of the Green Line not anywhere near the "real" Green Line.

Both Boston threads are weird to me. I don't know the history of that city and it's transit. But it's really unique. I haven't expected to see photos like this in 2008. Ever.

And on the OTOH, the commuter trains doesn't look like they go out that far on maps I've looked at. But I was never good at determining distance and scale.

That "thingy" on the roof was there when the cars were built in the 40's. It is the housing for the interior fans.

Most of the time the fans do their job adequately, but in the summer, they make the car feel like one of SEPTA's Almond Joy Budds [a convection oven on rails], fortunately the A-M ride is short [12 minutes end-to-end] so it isn't too unbearable.

If the T is serious about air-conditioning the cars, then they better think about a complete rewiring and a voltage upgrade since today's equipment can eat a shitload of electric power.

Maybe they can get away with taking AC units out of their old RTS buses, or out of the Flyer trolleys in storage and install them on the A-M cars. It might just work if they try hard enough.

The orange paint's been there for a while, they got it when the cars were rehabbed some time ago.

I remember when the PCCs were still green and white.

Well duh, the plans to reattach it are well underway! What's that? There were no plans to reattach, you were kidding? What are we going to do with all these green signs! Oh well...

That "thingy" on the roof was there when the cars were built in the 40's. It is the housing for the interior fans.

Actually, the 'Wartime' PCC's that make up today's Mattapan fleet did not have the rooftop monitors when built - these were installed by the Metropolitan Transit Authority in the late 1940's. Not all of the Wartime cars received the monitor, and those without were referred to afterwards as 'flattops'.

The uniqueness of Boston's subway (Was: Re: Photos Mattapan Line)

The uniqueness of Boston's transit system, in a nutshell, can be explained as follows:

The Green Line is the remnants of the city's streetcar network that tied into America's first subway, the Tremont Street Subway opened in 1897. The lines that survived did so because they mostly operate on private reservations and/or rights-of-way outside of the subway. The Riverside line was built on the right-of-way of the New York Central's Highland branch in the late 1950's.

The Orange Line is the remnants of the city's first true rapid transit operation, the Main Line Elevated. None of the original Main Line El route exists today (the original route temporarily operated through the Tremont Subway when opened in 1901 - the current Washington Street Tunnel did not open until 1908). Clearances along portions of the elevated route dictated the use of smaller cars, but 55-foot cars began service in 1957 and the current 65-foot 01200-01319 series cars entered service in the early 1980's.

The Blue Line operates through the East Boston Tunnel, which was originally a streetcar subway similar to the Green Line. This was converted to rapid transit operation in 1924, but tight clearances has always required the use of 48-foot cars and this continues today. The subway operation was extended to Revere in the 1950's and the MTA decided to use a catenary power system due to concerns about third-rail icing in winter (the line operates close to the shore). There has been talk about converting the line to full third-rail operation, but the route has been almost completely rebuilt in the past 15 years so it is unlikely to happen now. The Blue Line is currently the only OPTO operation on the MBTA system.

The Red Line was originally the Cambridge-Dorchester Subway, the last of the city's rapid transit routes to be built. This route benefited from experience in Boston and elsewhere with earlier subway routes, and tunnel clearances were generous enough to allow the use of 69-foot cars with wider bodies from day one. The route was extended to Andrew station in South Boston by 1918, and later to Ashmont station in Dorchester along a former New Haven Railroad branch by the late 1920's. Later extensions were opened to Quincy and Braintree (the South Shore Extension, also built along an old New Haven right-of-way) and to Cambridge and Somerville (the Northwest Extension) by the mid 1980's.

The Mattapan-Ashmont route was originally opened in 1928 and has been known as the High-Speed Line. It was built along the same New Haven branch line as the Ashmont extension. Extension of full Red Line service has been talked about over the years, but significant construction would be required to strengthen bridges along the route and build new power facilities. Rapid transit service would also likely entail the closure of most stations along the route and this would not go over well in the community. The PCC cars survived because of the power issue (LRV's and Type 7's would draw more power than the line is capable of handling today), the lack of a modern light-rail shop at Mattapan, and concerns about the condition of the old viaduct at Ashmont.

Regarding the commuter rail map - some of the lines are quite long. Outlying points include Fitchburg (49 miles), Worcester (44 miles) and Providence (41 miles).

To most Bostonians, the Red Line is big subway trains and the Green Line is trolleys. If the T is not going to repaint the PCC's red and white, they might as well call the Mattapan-Ashmont the Green Line.
