PHOTOS: Steamtown derailment

The Lackawanna Festival steam special from Delaware Water Gap to Scranton on Saturday had to be assisted at one point by a pair of Delaware Lackawanna Alco C425's, which were stored overnight across from Bridge 60 Tower, then moved into the parking lot Sunday morning to make room for the derailment activity.

Apparently while the excursion train was backing across Bridge 60 to enter Steamtown's yard, DL&W coach 550 split a switch and the train continued for several car lengths before stopping with 550's west truck plowing into the ballast.

Lucky you!

Seriously (as I get anyway), it doesn't appear that the damage is too severe.

I had intended to photograph Sunday's excursion emerging from Nay Aug tunnel. I'm not complaining, though; I got cool derailment photos.

That's messy. At least I can't see anything bad damage in the photos. Closest I have to those cars, are COACHES 3518 & 3572 DL&W MU CARS, which ran on the Erie-Lackawanna. :) Wouldn't want to see anymore to get lost.

Really looks like only one derailed truck. But, they'll need the crane for the car, right?

Those yard tracks are not as in good of shape as they look. Even on the gentlest of curves, there is nothing but screeching and squealing of the flanges, and not just from the locos. I do wonder how often the NPS gets out there to determine the real gauges of those tracks . . .

Eesh! Kinda hard to see where the tracks are under the car...
from my aging eyes, it looks as if it's laying on the rockbed there...

Oy! (atleast there was no geese aboard, no?)

Oy! (atleast there was no geese aboard, no?)

Correct. I suspect that if geese had been aboard, their yelling might have called the predicament to the conductor's attention before any damage occurred.
The train was backing into the Steamtown yard to participate in the ill-fated night photo session. Ill-fated in that tickets were $75 with the belief that the Reading F7A's and Jersey Central F3's would be present, along with additional cool stuff that also didn't show up allegedly because of government red tape (Steamtown is part of the National Park Service). All participants were to get a $35 refund because of the watered-down night photo roster. I don't know whether they got a further refund with the absence of the steam locomotive.
Canadian Pacific Pacific 2317 was present, along with the three former Conrail business train E8's.

Hey Bob,
Thanks for the great photos and coverage of the Steamtown derailment. I had full intentions of being there at least one day during the festival but I failed to put it on the calendar and I had a lapse of memory of it until Sunday night. It was on the Sunday night news and I realized I missed it. I'm sure glad that you were able to get there and produce such nice photos for us dummeys who screw up important dates LOL.
Again, many thanks for the photos.

Tho if the tower at the LEFT of the spillage site was manned, I'd presume THAT's the telltale witness.

Exactly. The train was backing into Steamtown Yard for Saturday's night photo session. The east truck of Lackawanna 550 went one way and the west truck went the other way. The crew wasn't paying attention, and when the tracks became farther apart than the trucks, the derailment occurred.

Yeah, well even if my crew is paying attention, they frequently cannot stop a train soon enough if it splits a switch line that.

Get out the 0-5-0 switcher!

And towers have a horn on which they can "blow taps" No? Is it two loud blasts that mean all movement stops INSTANTLY.
