I've gotten a better look at the trainsets involved:One is Engine 956, trailer 197, trailer 133, DM 625 the other is DM 623, trailer 148, can't see the other trailer or engine. Yes, there was a suicide attempt, duly noted elsewhere. They've arrested a suspect and the death toll is likely to be adjusted. Both DM's are total losses, along with at least one trailer (the one with the signal bridge draped over it). wayne |

Wait, so you want to obscure justice by turning an insane man into a sane man? Also, we don't have any definitive facts as of now. We don't know what his intentions were. If he wanted to commit suicide and ran out, well, the question is, did he know right from wrong? Apparently he got scared. He only cared about his life, and not realizing what could happen to others. I see him being put in a mental institution. |

Just out of curiousity, what is this "DM" that you speak of? Do you mean the F59PHs and F59PHIs that Metrolink operates? If so then yes the DM30ACs and DE30ACs that LIRR operates are vaguely related to them, but only slightly. I once heard somebody refer to a DE30AC as an F59PHC or something similar. The engine is roughly the same between the locos, an EMD 710 prime mover with either 12 or 16 cylinders, but really that about where the similarities end. The DE30AC uses a radial truck design, AC traction motors, is not fitted with the EMD california emissions kit, and was assembled by a third party in NYS. |

While I was out in Cali, I had the thought of a massive rail system. Most of the trackage would run over the freeways (kinda like JFK AirTrain's Jamaica branch), and would extend further than MetroLink; from the desert to the coast, and from SB to SD.The entire system would run independent of other railroads, so there would be no freight trains running on the trackage, and there would be connections to airports in Palm Springs, Ontario, LA, and SD. Metrolink has too many grade crossings. |

Gee, you just described probably what the now comotose California High Speed Rail line would have accomplished in 20-30 years assuming it's initial lines were successful. It was to be a fully grade separated HSR system lacking any interface with the FRA network and offering European or Asian-like HSR speeds of 350kph (220mph) between major cities. There appear to have been plans to make the CalTrain corridor line a non-FRA set of tracks, electrified at the 25kv the rest of the system would be electrified at, and working like the NEC. Sadly with Governor Davis shamed out of office by Enron-type dealings by the power industry and the election of Herr Gropenfuhrer, the system is all but dead. But at least a few folks on the left coast haven't given up hope: http://www.bayrailalliance.org |

Metrolink does NOT have "DM's".They also do not have an engine 956...so it must have been 856. The trains were: 625-133-197-886 623-148-177-856 856 is an F59PH 886 is an F59PHI 623-625 are car cars (like what NJ Transit uses...diesel pushing) 133-148 are 1992 Bombardier coach trailers 177 is a 1996 Bombardier coach trailer 197 is a 2002 Bombardier coach trailer What all the news reports are saying now is that the southbound Metrolink hit the car on the crossing, derailed, picked the switch into the siding where the UP train was parked, everything jumped/flipped and blocked the northbound main right at the moment the northbound train was coming by, sending it into oblivion. It knocked down an overhead signal bridge which shreded car 148. And the union Pacific engine was SD70M 4323, parked on a siding with a trainload of repair materials for a washout in Ventura County. News reports are asying, and they showed fireman pulling bodies out of the cab...that both UP crewmen are among the fatalities. Nobody has said anything, but from the looks of Metrolink cab car 625, the Metrolink engineer didn't survive either. |

The fault was NOT the parked locomotive either....it was parked on a siding doing nothing. The cause was a car (as in AUTOMOBILE) on the track on which the southbound Metrolink train #100 from Moorpark was travelling, cab car first. It hit the car, derailed (picked a switch into the siding where the UP work train was parked), the wreckage then blocked the northbound main right at the moment northbound Metrolink #901 came along with engine 856 leading, and it piled into the mess. |

The last line of your post is SO TRUE!!!!!I know many of the Amtrak and Metrolink engineers out here...and believe me, once they have enough seniority to stay off the Metrolink runs, they do. And they all cite the same reason..."the damn crossings, you're always blowing the horn and getting ready to jump out of the seat (when in a cab car). And recently, Metrolink instituted a rule that whenever the train is being operated from the cab car, the cab door MUST be closed. (In other words, slow the engineer down when they have to bail.) Used tobe they always had the cab door open...and the cab section of the cab car was roped off and closed to passengers. (It still is roped off, even with the closed cab door closes.) |

Metrolink cab cars are NOT that heavy...they are 109,000 pounds. It doesn't take much to get under them to make one jump just that couple inches so the flanges are not inside the rail any more....Metrolink has had three major wrecks involving cab cars at grade crossings...and all derailed when the cab cars derailed slightly and picked a switch near the incident. (The first two involved the very same cab car, it's no longer in service.) By contrast, they also had two major incidents involving locmotive-first trains, hitting major obstacles (one a semi carrying a huge air conditioning condenser unit, the other a semi full of plumbing supplies). Neither one of those derailed, even though the locomotives involved did have major body damage (and both returned to service.) |

Such incidents are not exclusive to Metrolink, in 1992 (or thereabouts) a northbound L. A.
