Metrolink cab cars are NOT that heavy...they are 109,000 pounds. It doesn't take much to get under them to make one jump just that couple inches so the flanges are not inside the rail any more....

Metrolink has had three major wrecks involving cab cars at grade crossings...and all derailed when the cab cars derailed slightly and picked a switch near the incident. (The first two involved the very same cab car, it's no longer in service.)

By contrast, they also had two major incidents involving locmotive-first trains, hitting major obstacles (one a semi carrying a huge air conditioning condenser unit, the other a semi full of plumbing supplies). Neither one of those derailed, even though the locomotives involved did have major body damage (and both returned to service.)
