I operate the R142's three days a week.I Have been doing it for almost 5 years and every train sounds alike to me, even though some of them do sound a bit different, when im on the platfrom and the train is pulling out. Hard to tell with hearing protection on though. |

I know some operators wear hearing protection on the (4) line, but not all of them. But you see more operators wear hearing protection over the summer for some reason. |

But is there a specific reason to wear hearing protection on the (2) ans (5) lines?OSHA declared the sound levels at "points" on the (2) and (5) lines to exceed their definition of what they consider to be too loud in the work place. In response, RTO declared it mandatory that all conductors and train operators on the (2) and (5) lines wear hearing protection while on the train. |

OSHA did some kind of study, found certain places on the Deuce and Five Lines very loud...RTO said Crews wear hearing protection who work the Deuce and Five Lines, if you dont you are looking to get pulled off that train if they catch you without it. |

Its didn't suprise me I normally don't like wearing hearing Protection but the AC is so noisy it drove me crazy so I use my hearing protection on those R 142's. Thankfully the R 160's don't seem as loud.It was kind of funny at Stillwell when they posted the Bulletin some Supervisor started checking train crews for the hearing protection and wrote up some people. The look on his face when a TSS told him to read the whole Bulletin its only the #2 and #5 Lines. All the write ups went into the trash. ONLY AT Stillwell!! |

I've MET (and talked with) a few who have piped off the ship the past 6-7 years or so and all I can say is that the "brain damage from on high" has been unprecedented ... you and I both remember the "wing it or fling it" mentality that the railroad of yore was built upon ... get it done ... wing it or fling it and if nobody DIED, it was a GREAT day. :)They LEFT ebcause of what makes TSS these days. HIS pops could tell you stories. SAD part is that Stillwell hasn't changed much over 35+ years from what I've been told by others there. Lemme put it to you this way ... Bensonhurst. :(The BRONX (as you know is FAR more diverse and "integrated" than Brooklyn even TODAY. Do the math. I was "IND" and I hung out with those evil "IND people" that Adam Clayton Powell *made* happen before "full unification." When *I* came on board in 1970, only three years after (ahem "Eunich-i-cation" of the BMT") us "invaders" from the CITY subway were frowned upon every bit as much as the BLET looks down on those "ghetto transit type wannabe's" ... I'm in AWE that any of that managed to survive all these years. :( B division is absolutely a "slower" kinda "country cowpie" compared to the cigar-chomping "push-push-push-push-push" hectic of the IRISH railroad y'all be pulling handle on ... but the ITALIAN railroad has a wonderful kinda laid back "train gets there when it does, arsehole" kinda intervals and if you go 5 minutes late, nobody GIVES a rats ass because you're the first train they've seen in half a day. :) B division is a gas, so long as you don't pay any attention to prima donnas and gaping morons. Think 128th and St Ann's ... I *know* you can find the queen. (grin) |

I've always said we did more with less back in the early 80s than what we accomplish today. Creative Railroading is what I called it. The need for accountability and the fear of bad press and lawsuits brought us to where we're at today:-( |

I don't think its much of a BMT/IND thing now its a Location thing South Vs Queens. Then in the South its South vs Uptown. I guess it depends on the people you come in contact with. Most of the D Line personal that work out of Bedford Pk tend to stay in the T/D office between trips. They don't like to mix with the other lines and for good reasons. I been Extra board at Stillwell so I seen the mess that could happen. |
