Subway Connections to national rail

I don't remember where this is listed online, but where are the connections from the NYC subway system to the national rail network? I know there's one in the Linden Shops, but where are the others? Would they appear on Peter Dougherty's track maps?

Thanks.

The other connection is at 38th & 4th(that's where the gate is) it is street-running from 3rd Ave & there is any NYCT yard on 2nd ave between 37 & 29th sts.

Yeah through a really long series of yards and stuff. The Bay Ridge is all the way down in the 60s.

Funny, because I read somewhere that when the Williamsburg Bridge emergency shutdown occurred, cars were transferred from ENY to Coney Island using the Bay Ridge Branch. Heh.

IS there a connection at Unionport? In the area of Fresh Pond?

That was when the direct connection between the LIRR and Canarsie Line was operational. When was that connection severed? Now that would have been an interesting routing for a fantrip.

I beleive there was an NYCTA signal on the LIRR at that point, don't know if any photos of it are arouind. Now that would be a fantrip.

By directly I mean a continuous connection, no back-tracking. Wasn't there once a connection between the Sea Beach and the LIRR? Must have been others too back in the real old days.

Incidentally, the connection onto Canarsie was setup so that a NYCT train would have to wrong rail onto the Bay Ridge ROW, so there's a little bit of 'backtracking' involved.

I dream of using N2 to pull a train of redbirds all the way to California. Imagine how long that would take!

The Canarsie connection was a backtrack but a freight train coming from the LIRR could have run right onto the track. I'm surprised it never happened because there was so much vandalism along the freight line. I guess they locked the switches up pretty good. I lived near the long-gone LIRR-SBK junction at 20th Avenue. Kids were always hanging out down the tracks and we figured one day some punk would tamper with the switches sending a freight train roaring out onto McDonald Avenue. Never happened although I'm sure some of the local morons tried their best.

N2 pulling/pushing redbirds to L.A. Union Station. Passing through other cities transit systems along the way. The Mother of All FanTrips! I'd prefer R46s myself.

When the rockaway div.was first opened there was a track conn.just before the A trained up to the EL.There was about 200feet of new t.a.track,3rd.rail&a homeball that connected directly into the still running ozone park branch of the LIRR[abandonded may,1962]I,ve always wondered if the t.a.took a train of R9`s to whitepot junction just to see if they could. The other EL connections to RR`S were 132st&willis ave.an el station on NHRR property&155st.& 8th ave[polo grounds shuttle]track conn.into the NYCRR.

Canarsie-LIRR connection was severed sometime in the late '80's or early '90s once the 'Y' connection was made that goes from both the IRT (at Junius Street) and the BMT via Canarsie (at Livonia Ave.) was installed around circa, 1989, and merges into the lead to Linden Yards. There is to be found the 'dark' signal that allows movement between Linden Yard and the 'Y' flyover.

The original LIRR connection was a wrong-rail move from the Canarsie line as well, since it was a left-hand switch out of the southbound track just north of the New Lots Avenue station. There is still a remnant of the switch there as well as the gated fence.

The switch was not always there, because IIRC it was originally placed there so there the R-16 subway cars (last used on the Canarsie Line) could be easily scrapped. This simplified things, since normal scrap procedures would have required the 16's to moved all the way down to Coney Island Yards, which is a long route through the system from the EAstern Division.

Let's not forget there used to be a BRT/BMT connection with the LIRR via Chestnut Street (Norwood Ave.) on the old Jamaica AVenue El....this was finished before World War II, but if you are good at noticing old ROWs will be able to see the area of connection even today.

Yeah, I've seen both of the mentioned connections numerous times.

I wonder what happens if a train accepts the wrong lineup into an unpowered track.

I don't know.

I do know what would physically happen if the train ran onto an unpowered track. What I want to know is how long it would take to get the train off the track, and what rammifications this would have on service. Ditto if in the past a freight had made it onto the Canarsie ROW.
