The switch is right outside the station. In order for the tower to reverse the switch, at least two preceding automatic signals have to be red to prevent an approaching train from potentially striking the home signal, derailing, and/or colliding with another train.

In the case of many interlockings, particularly in the IND, the approach signals in the station will clear slowly and allow the train to enter. This is built into the signal relays, and is not indicated by any wayside signs telling the T/O of this.

What's the difference?

We just go by what others have said on the radio. Part military, part TA jargon.

Like November, Quincy, Zebra, Apple, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, Echo, Fox, George, Johnny, Larry, Mikey, Romeo. And the former Victor and Whiskey.

It kind of started in the Gunn era when the new superintendants wanted a little more professionalism to the opearation because they objected to Dog and Boy for as the B/D jargon.

I don't know if there is an official bulletin or notice out as to what the lines are to be called.

The NATO Phonetic alphabet was created to largely eliminate the ambiguity which may exist when two words that sound roughly the same, like "George" or "Johnny", are repeated over a static filled radio link where the differentiating syllables may be dropped. Golf and Juliet are different enough that they can be deciphered even if part of the transmission is lost.

That's not to say the phonetic alphabet is perfect. Zero and Sierra cause problems, but that can be remedied by simply using Oh for zero. Since NYCT doesn't have an Oscar train that greatly simplifies things.

I don't know if there is an official bulletin or notice out as to what the lines are to be called.

No Notice or Bulletin as far back as I'm able to check, but the training manuals issued to operating employees have a page on military time and the military alphabet under the section Communication, Radio Rules, and Protocols.

So while I don't think you can be written up for breaking a rule by using some other name, I suppose you could be reprimanded, or reminded of the right way.

I can't imagine somebody being openly scolded for saying "Nancy" instead of "November", but if someone were to call themselves the "4:15 Nancy Ditmars" instead of the "1615 Nancy Ditmars", I can imagine Control getting upset.

The difference is that it's not really the "military alphabet" if the letters have different names.

Personally I believe the NATO phonetic alphabet should be taught in schools to kindergartners alongside the monosyllabic names of the letters, or even instead of them. Greek and Hebrew have polysyllabic names for their letters and they get along fine.

And while I'm talking about letter-naming policy, get rid of the name "Double-U." The letter should either be called "Whiskey" under a phonetic alphabet scheme or "wee" under a monosyllabic scheme, consistent with other letters like "bee," "see," "dee," "ee," "gee," "pee," "tee," and "vee."

'in Spanish it's calle "Double-V."'

In French too - 'double-vay'. More logical (given the look of the letter) than double-U, actually. But then French calls y 'ee-Greque' (Greek i) !

'But "pee" ... must go!'

How squeamish can you get (8-) ! However, I was surprised to discover that the letter corresponding to p in the Greek alphabet - pi - is pronounced 'pee' by North Americans. Brits have always pronounced it 'pie', which in scientific conversation avoids confusion with the Roman p.
