I'm not nostalgic to the way the system looked, or nostalgic to the condition of the subway then. The nostalgia probably just is high for those of us that were teenagers because, for me personally, I get some rush of memories coming back when I see those photos. I had SO many good times on those trains, and I guess like most people look fondly on their childhood years, that's probably what makes all of us get a warm feeling of nostalgia come over us when we see those photos. it's not the condition or what the subway was like back then that is nostalgic, it's all the memories that goes along with it (many good ones) that all come back.

The first totally overhauled train I rode was an R38 on the A in 1987. I thought it was a new car class, and I wondered why there were no door chimes. It took a while to see that it was an older car class, fixed up. Night and day.

I'd assume some trains were better than others of course.

Only the R44-46's, but even they had some degree of graffiti.

But, it's covered! Not just in random tags, but all that dirt and grime with no lights.

And that was your typical train. If anything, as David said, that is a GOOD train for back then. The non-stainless trains were way worse.

I can see most of those people going another way.

The trains were very busy rush hours, so people rode....they had to.

I saw them with some, but they were like the "showcase" trains. And the Broadway line was probably the "showcase" line....if there was a such thing. What I mean by that is that they looked the best. As bad as that refrigerator tile may have seemed in the 90's, it was so neat and clean (and modern) on the Broadway line, when the whole system was an old fashioned wreck of a system.
I would often take the L on our crap filthy dusgusting trains to Union Square with my father as a kid, and then get the N there. I always thought, "this is the line the 'special' people must ride because they had the nice trains and stations. 49th may look outdated and "Brady Bunch" today, but back then, it may have been the shining star station of the system.

When the N and R swapped northern terminals (and fleets) in May of 1987

Yup, the N in the 70's was one of the few clean lines, in general, at least the trains. Although they did get some graffiti, it wasn't like all the other trains.

As for your May 1987 comment, that's also true for the M line. The M seemed to go from bad to worse when it was thown off the Brighton and onto the West End back then, at least until the GOHed R42's began to arrive.

That sounds right. When Archer Ave. opened up, grafittied R27's were quickly removed from East New York. The redbirds lasted about another year before they too were gone....to the C line.

The best "split jobs" I worked when I came out was the road Canarsie car wash jobs. AM markup at Canarsie, two trips to 8th Avenue, TC to CIY, wash and wax with the hour of dryout time, back to Canarsie lunch and the last trip. Nice compared to a 5 tripper with no pee pee time.

No. Starting in 1984/5, Jamaica had the same cars it does today, all R46's and R32's. Prior to GOH, all R32's ran on the G and N (later) R lines only. Anything before 1984 is before my time.

1987 did see some ODD assignments. For about 2 months starting after Labor Day, many R46's ran on the N to Astoria. A couple of redbird R30's were assigned to the R line in Queens (the only time I ever saw them used in 10 car consists). Some R68's were even used on the F.

I used to say the same about Wall St. on the Lex. Then I recently got a look at what they buried under that shiny blue brick. Ugh! That station was beautiful.
