I'm the biggest L train supporter but the W is a useful line. It isn't crush loaded like the 6, but most (if not all) of its seats are usually filled. The R isn't reliable enough to handle the Broadway local by itself. The W also relieves the N (which receives an influx of 7 riders at Queensboro Plaza). Just because a line is a local doesn't mean its useless.

If you want to know what life would be like without the W in Astoria just come around middays when W trains are turned at QBP due to track work. At least 10 minute waits for jammed full N trains.

BTW, the N train at night, say around midnight, is rush hour crush load full into Astoria.

By NYCT loading guidelines, that's quite empty.

Fortunately, this is evidence of what a single car on a single train looks like (at an unspecified time of day in an unspecified location), not evidence of what the typical peak load is in the AM rush.

NYCT policy calls for a 125% seated off-peak load. (A 125% seated load is a passenger load equal to 125% of the number of seats. That is, if every seat in the car is filled, 20% of the passengers are standing.) Looks like a lot less than a 125% seated load to me.

The rated capacity of an R-40 is 145 passengers. Do you see 145 passengers there? I see about half that number, probably less.
