Yards have no track zones but hardware fixed trips so you may be correct but many blocks don't even have that! I'm thinking the run o block at Grand Central (shuttle) a few months ago.

Scary. I'm doing inspection on MNCR 4016/4017 and wonder how long I can do a undercar run-about because the trainset has no deadman...just an alerter which must be responded to otherwise trainset dumps BIE. M7 Periodic Inspection manual asks for a lot of tests but MNCR papers don't ask for individual truck/brake panel test.....just full service/min brake/max brake/BIE. I'm happy doing what I know best as a CI. RRCI Peter

No, that would be something with CBTC Yard Mode when it gose into effect. It would limted the train to 10mph so if the track in the yard they use is for the wast then that track could be set for no more then 3mph.

Don't say that I on the L on Mondays and Tuesdays. As for the last one the T/O was at fault. The one over the switch leaving the yard, the T/O was in CBTC Bypass since he/she was not CBTC quilfied at the time and was doing 18mph over the switch. This the T/O got sick and lost controll of the train. He won't be a T/O much longer since have a seizure will most licky disquife him. The one at 8ave was not the T/O fault, the train took power while he was brkeing the train, at that time CBTC was not working in this zone.

Glad to hear everyone survived!

I made comments back in December of 2001 when I got to operate 8101-8108 prior to delivery and made numerous comments about the absolutely stupid location of the controller handle - the way it's nestled into the window the way it is. I had concerns too about what would happen if a motorpeople were to slump over against the window and that _appears_ to be precisely what happened here.

And while I don't know what KIND of seizure the person had, I've seen enough situations where the right hand will tend to clench as the person slumps over and the way the handle is designed, that move will result directly in "zoom-zoom-zoom" the way it's designed. :(

And now, years later we undertsnad WHY the handle location was an afterthought since some day, it will be removed when the motorpeople are replaced by "Windows Train." But the location chosen is a downright awful place to have to try to run a train, and now appears to be DANGEROUS as well. :(

I'm glad nobody got killed.

although expensive, add a timer to each yard track 30' or so from the bumper block
but should a t/o hit this signal, no action is to be taken against the t/o

unless of course, they now want 2 people in the t/o cab as it approaches the block
then should the train hit the block they have a scapegoat unless they both suffer seizures

Just have CBTC Yard Mode running in the yard, there would be no way the train could get above 10mph and the train would have been going no more then 1mph by time it got to the block and would have stoped by it self before hitting it.

Another RTO charge for the L supt. HAHA
If they had kept C/Rs on the layups, that may not have happened.
Maybe they can move the fixed trips back like they did at Rockaway Park if they are willing to sacrifice storage. 30 feet of tripping distance is more than enough to get the train back to 15 MPH and do it again. One idea would be to have the hand switchman remotely control the stop arms with a panic button in the shack or remote control to trip movements within the yard tracks if speeds are exceeded or a switch is split. Plenty of good ideas coming but they will insist on keeping the workforce out of the control picture

Now knowing the NYCTA, how long will it be before a new fence is put back up? (The ivy can't be replaced as fast though.)

The way the 143 controller works though, next best thing to no deadman. If you're going to slump against the window, you're going to keep the T from twirling as you push it to "full power" as you fall forward. VERY bad design. First thing I noticed when I went to run one. :(

That's an ouch for sure. Did the car knockers get a look under the anticlimber to see what's damaged? Doesn't look like much body damage but you can't tell what's underneath from the photos.

I didn't even know about this until tonight. I saw a picture cut out of the paper and pinned up at Stillwell when leaving for the day, doubled back to get a glimpse of it, but still thought it was that last derailment. It was when I got home and received a picture in an e-mail, I realized this was a new incident.

Encouraging a brick wall stop is far better than hitting a brick wall. :(

M7s do fare much better Peter. They have a conductor if the train skips a station and cab signalling if the engineer slumps over and the C/R isn't failsafe. Kevin is ready with that brick wall.

I'm sure John Liu will still find a way to blame CBTC for the accident.

Well ... no ... not quite. It's REALLY Garden State Brickface and stucco on particle board. But even your hairdresser won't know for sure until you've hit the blind trip. :)

If he understood how the controller was designed, he'd have a field day. In all seriousness though, that should SERIOUSLY be looked into. :(
