Accident in Canarsie Yard earlier today

At Rockaway Parkway station at about 11:45 AM today, I was about to board an L train when (on what I learned later is Track 10 in the yard), a train was speeding down the track (at at LEAST a good 15 mph), and I knew that there wasn't any good coming out of this. About 5 seconds later, I heard a loud bang (startling everyone in the station), and the first car of the train (8277) wound up running off the track, and was telescoped over the bumper block, with the T/O cab hanging over the entrance where buses pull into the station (missing a B6 which has JUST cleared and had entered the station).

8277, despite what happened, looks only to have damage to the composite part of the blind end (which ended up slightly bumping that of 8278).

Pictures will be shown of the end result tonight. The T/O was carried off on a stretcher, but he looked alert. The accident sounded worse than it actually was, although the sound of it could be heard from Rockaway and Flatlands (and the firehouse, which is just 400 feet away from the station).

Shit, you actually saw it derail? I can't even imagine what that looked like...

I saw the aftermath when I passed through at around 2PM...the R143 was about 6-7 feet off the ground up in the trees!!! Traffic was a nightmare with all the beese that use the little transit-center next to the station being detoured. I don't know how B42 transferees are being handled, but all beese except the 60 are stopping at Glenwood Road and Rockaway Pkwy in both directions.

Had to be something like that. No T/O who is conscious would have had his train going that fast (it was going at 10 mph at least faster than what it should have been).

As for personnel at the station, they were taking pictures, not yet aware that one of their own had suffered the seizure you mentioned. No one is laughing now.

However, when I was there, the "boom" quieted everyone in the station, except for supervision who were running out of the tower.

BTW, you asked about the B42. Right now, that detour is LEFT at Flatlands, RIGHT at 96, RIGHT at Glenwood, to Rockaway, and stand (likely in the B17 stop).

If you ask me though, this train will likely be back in service in a few weeks (once the damaged blind end is fixed---assuming there wasn't also anticlimber damage).

I didn't see anyone coming out of the station looking for the B42 with a block transfer or anything, but I wasn't paying them that much attention. I didn't see anyone getting off the B42 headed towards the L because there were other buses in front of the unloading B42s from my line of sight. I didn't see anyone with a block ticket in their hand, but I didn't exactly scrutinize every person walking by.

What happened to the deadmans feature?

It would be reasonable to assume that if the T/O had a seizure that his right hand would have come off the handle bringing the train to an emergency stop.

Only stop arm (fixed) is located 13 feet from the block. Serves mainly to ensure train is not taking power when it hits the block; it will not prevent a speeding train from hitting the block. This has been demonstrated many times over.

He was in WSP, (Wayside Signal Protection) once you leave the main line it goes to it. So he was not limited to the 10mph that I have to use when coming out of the yard in RM(Restricted Manuak), if he was the Train would have slow him down.

The yard will be down the road CBTC controled in yard mode, so after that the trains will be limited to 10mph and will be stoped before the train will every get to the block no mater what the T/O dose. The train will only get within 10ft of the block at 1mph or the train will domp.

Manual is not the opposite of CBTC.

Properly equipped trains have been running in CBTC mode south of Broadway Junction and north of 3rd Avenue(?). They are still being operated manually.

CBTC is not the same thing as ATO. Either one can exist without the other (although, in the NYCT context, ATO cannot currently exist without CBTC).
