Glenmont loses its charm

Sad to say, Glenmont on WMATA's Red Line is losing the thing that gives it such charm - the sodium lamps in the pylons, which impart that reddish glow that makes Glenmont so special, are being replaced with the standard mercury-vapor lights found in the rest of the system. Take a look:

January 4, 2006

March 15, 2006

I don't know the exact date that they began the changeover, but it was some time between these two dates.

I think it's a shame - the red lights gave Glenmont some charm.

Look there's one or two orange light left way at the end. When they're gone...

To me the new lights seem brighter and safer. I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Ain't no exit at the end of the tracks? Scary. Not the spot to be trapped at if you got a fire, that's for sure.

I like the new lights, but that's just me. Old lights make the place look like a symphony concert hall, which I could never stay awake in, and it hurts my eyeballs . . .

The photo was taken from the station entrance pod. Glenmont's only got one exit; the majority of Metrorail stations only have one set of exits.

Wrong. Ever WMATA Station has an emergency exit at the ends of the platform when there is no surface mezzanine exit at the ends of the platform. Because Glenmont has it’s surface mezzanine near mid platform there are emergency exit stairs at both ends of the platform. There also are emergency exit stairs in the shaft beyond the interlocking north of the station.

I like the new lights, but that's just me. Old lights make the place look like a symphony concert hall, which I could never stay awake in, and it hurts my eyeballs.

Personally I prefer the mercury lamps over the sodium lamps because they better knock down the natural reddish tone of the sand and gravel in the concrete.

That is too bad. I've always liked the different color at Glenmont.

Several stations on the A Route also have improved lighting, including Friendship Heights (how long will that last?) and the areas under the pods at Tenleytown and Woodley Park. I was riding in the 4th car of my train home on Friday night since I was unable to reach the first and stopped under the pods at both Tenley and Woodley.

All of the newer systems (LA, ATL, DC, etc) seem to follow the same pattern don't they? I've heard a few reasons why they are so large, but what it comes down to is that because of the way the stations are constructed, having the platforms and mezzanines so large is relatively inexpensive given the overall costs involved.

To allow people to exit more quickly and reduce congestion on the platform.

Having huge stations to accommodate more passengers but designing them with limited access and egress seems contradictory to me.

The red light you see on the right side of the right tunnel is the B11 08 interlocking signal.

The illuminated emergency exit sign is in the tunnel above fire door that leads to the stairs in the shaft adjacent to the blow out vent shaft at the end of the station.

The station is a terminal station. The area around the station is primarily low to medium density residential.

Glenmont is by no means a 'huge station'. The open columnless design of the station gives the illusion of a large space. As I recall the platform is less the 30' (9.1m) wide

How so, said exit stair can be accessed from either tunnel. Where they do exist they are all within 30' (9.1m) of the end of the platform. The only exception is at the north end of the Congress Heights station platform which has the fire door to the emergency exit stair located in the center of the end wall of the train hall.

There are several dangers when entering a tunnel. The major ones are the third rail and approaching trains. The fact that a tunnel is not an ideal location for an emergency exit for passengers on the platform would seem to be beyond dispute. I would guess that it was a compromise location based on cost. If it is really the preferred location for an emergency exit, I'd like to hear why.

I all station where their are emergency exit stairs beyond the ends of the platform one does not need to enter the track bed to get to the exit. The emergency exit is accessed by way of the tunnel walkway. The third rail is always on the opposite side of the tunnel from the walkway.

Even in the event of a train evacuation in a tunnel walking in and or crossing the track bed to get to the exit is not necessary in more the 95 percent of the underground sections of the system. In 100 percent of the underground of the sections of the system one never has to walk near or step over the third rail to get to the tunnel walkway.
