It was in the 1960s that the thru express service switched to and from the local tracks north of East 180th St. in order to provide more passengers with a one seat ride rather than having to change trains at East 180th St. to use the Lexington Avenue line. |

Effective on April 18, 1965 No 5 EXPRESS trains would serve the Dyre Avenue Line. No. 5 THRU-EXPRESSES would continue to operate to East 241st Street during rush hours. This meant that passengers at station between Burke Avenue and Bronx Park East would lose direct service to the Lexington Avenue Line. Effective on May 3, 1965 thru expresses would run local north of East 180th Street. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

I knew there was a swap of the 2 and 5 Bronx terminals around this time. Before the swap if I remember correctly 2 trains served the Dyre Avenue line and 5 trains served the White Plains Road line except during late night hours where the 2 served White Plains Road and the 5 ran as a shuttle to Dyre Avenue. |

Murray: Here is the full story Tuscarora Dispatch No. 5 IRT Service Changes April 1965 A new IRT schedule went into effect on Sunday, April 18, 1965. No.2 and No.5 trains exchanged terminals in The Bronx while No. 2 and No. 3 trains exchanged terminals in Brooklyn. Prior to the changes No. 2 7th Avenue Express trains had run between Dyre Avenue and Flatbush Avenue from 6 AM to 8 PM, seven days a week. Trains ran between East 180th Street and Flatbush Avenue M-F 6 AM – 9 PM and S-S 6 AM to 12 midnight. Trains ran between East 241st Street and New Lots Avenue M-F 9 PM to 6 AM and S-S 12 midnight to 6 AM. No. 3 7th Avenue Express trains ran between 145th Street-Lenox Avenue and New Lots Avenue M-F 6 AM – 9 PM and S-S 6 AM to 12 midnight. The 145th Street Shuttle ran between 145th Street and 135th Street M-F from 9 PM to 1 AM. No. 5 Lexington Avenue Express ran on weekdays between East 241st Street and South Ferry (7-9 PM), Atlantic Avenue (9AM-4 PM) and Utica Avenue (6-9 AM, 4-7 PM). Weekend service ran between East 241th Street and South Ferry, Sat 8 AM to 12 midnight and Sunday 6 AM to 12 midnight. Early Saturday morning service ran to and from Utica Avenue or New Lots Avenue from 6 AM to 8 AM. No. 5 Lexington Avenue Thru-Express ran on weekdays during rush hours in the direction of traffic between East 241th Street and Utica Avenue. These trains ran express in The Bronx between Gun Hill Road and 3rd Avenue stopping only at East 180th Street. No. 9 Dyre Avenue Locals ran between Dyre Avenue and East 180th Street from 8 PM to 6 AM seven days a week. The Bowling Green Shuttle ran between Bowling Green and South Ferry (Inner Loop) M-F 6 AM to 7 PM and Saturday 6 AM – 8 AM. No. 1 and 7 trains as well as the 3rd Avenue Local and the 42nd Street Shuttle were not affected by the changes. After the service changes were implemented the following was in effect. No. 2 trains would run between East 241st Street and New Lots Avenue at all times. No. 3 trains would run as before except that the Brooklyn terminal was now Flatbush Avenue. No. 5 Lexington Avenue Express trains would now terminate at Dyre Avenue from 6 AM to 8 PM seven days a week and at East 180th Street M-F 6 AM to 9 PM and S-S 6 AM to 12 midnight. Saturday morning service to Brooklyn was eliminated with all weekend trains running to South Ferry. No. 5 Lexington Avenue Thru-Express would continue to operate to East 241th Street and Utica Avenue. Effective May 3, 1965 they would run local north of East 180th Street. No. 9 Dyre Avenue Locals would continue to operate but would now be designated as No. 5 trains. Bowling Green Shuttle Saturday morning service was replaced by through No. 5 trains. Some notes: The times that I have given are approximate. Sunday morning service actually began abot 7-8 AM. Note that late service began at 9 PM on weekdays and 12 midnight on weekends. I take it No. 6 trains like the Nos. 1 and 7 trains as well as the 3rd Avenue Local and the 42nd Street Shuttle were not affected by the changes. Operationally the IRT was unaffected. Several routes did receive new designations though. The Third Avenue Local became the no. 8. The four shuttle services; 42th Street, Bowling Green, 145th Street and Dyre Avenue, received the "SS" designation. This was only on maps and other signage. The roll sign were not changed at the time. Larry, RedbirdR33 Larry |

As I recall, although the IRT SMEEs had line numbers on the end roll signs, the use of numbers for IRT routes did not become official till November of 1967 when the BMT/IND Chrystie merger went into effect and the new route letters were made official along with the iRT route numbers. |

The 1959 subway map did not include route numbers or letters on the map itself, but did include IND letters in the service guide: ![]() ![]() The 1966 update included highlighted free transfer points, and still did not include route numbers or letters on the map itself, but did include IND letters, IRT numbers, and BMT southern letters in the service guide: ![]() ![]() Post-Chrystie, the 1967 map (reproduction) included route numbers and letters everywhere: ![]() I never understood why the IRT showed route numbers only on the end signs and not on the side signs, until the replacement colored signs appeared. Starting with the R27s, the southern BMT end and side signs had both the letter and the route name along with "Broadway": ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() When the R32s arrived, they eliminated the route name and left only the letter and "Broadway": ![]() ![]() ![]() This proved to be so unpopular and confusing to riders, that the TA had to install informational signs at BMT stations: |

My 1965-ish Hagstrom's map shows IRT numbers, except 8 for 3rd Ave., and Southern Division letter markings, but no markings for Three Stooges Division routes. |
