Several times across Europe I've been inspected within the system despite having already used my fare card at a fare gate. (So I'm not counting Germany, Switzerland, etc. where there are no fare gates). One time the inspector was directly behind the fare gate - like 5 feet back - which really confused me at the time. So if he can see that the fare gate already opened for me, I guess all he could possibly be checking was that I wasn't illicitly using a special/half-fare card or something like that.In NYC they will need to be really well-trained for dealing with the public. They may need to be accompanied by actual police whenever possible. They should also probably document everything well so they are ready to address accusations of racism and the like. |

That could be why he scanned you. And that's probably why he's standing a the entry point. He's being lazy. Instead of walking platforms and checking he's standing right where people enter the system. In NYC they will need to be really well-trained for dealing with the public. They may need to be accompanied by actual police whenever possible. They should also probably document everything well so they are ready to address accusations of racism and the like. I can only imagine the lingo they'll use in training. The job description said the idea to reduce reliance on NYPD for enforcing fare payment. As for racial profiling, that will be an issue. Accusations will be made. When I heard about this new job title I imagined the poor employee doing this job on the B46. |

In LA they have police go with the fare checkers, but LA Metro really only started checking routinely in the last few weeks. I think that was due to pressure and ridicule from social media.Fare checks had been on an official, but unannounced pause for the last 7 years due to the the pandemic and statistics that showed that black riders were disproportionately cited. Well the Metro Board phrased it as "black and brown" with brown meaning Latino. This was even though Latino riders were cited proportionally to ridership. Anyways my point is that NYC may face the same issue. |

NYC would definitely have issues with "racial profiling" lawsuits. You can just see it. I think the plan will be to phase out token booth clerks, aka "station agents" and have them roaming, checking OMNY cards on platforms where people are waiting for a train. On buses I don't know how it will be enforced? Will an agent just get on a bus and check? |

My bet is that they will just go with the current inefficient, SBS practice: be plainly obvious in advance of the stop with their uniforms, stop the bus in place (canceling out a good chunk of the time-savings) and check everyone on the bus.Other possible practices that they probably won't use: 1) Pose as a regular passenger. Sit/stand as appropriate while the vehicle is at a stop. Then when the vehicle starts moving begin conducting checks until the next stop. This is what I saw in Zurich, but I think in New York could be unsafe for the inspector both due to violence and the risk of discrimination claims. (Sometimes in Zurich the inspector sacrifices the incognito status and just has a police officer accompany during the inspection - but the vehicle is still able to move and not held in place). 2) Wear the big scary inspector uniforms and travel as a team, get on the vehicle. But don't let on when you are going to inspect everyone (it may be right away or it may be many stops after you get on) and ultimately do so while the vehicle is moving. You can also stick around when you have no intent to inspect, just to keep people guessing. This is along the lines of what I saw in Stockholm and some other places and may be the best combination of safe and effective for the inspector in New York. 3) In Paris and Milan on the Metro (subways), usually at a big transfer point when trying to switch between lines, I’d just run into a line (wall to wall) of inspectors that you could not just walk past. I think the only option for avoiding would have been to turn around and go back to the platform you were coming from, but I'm not sure what would have happened if I tried that (would they have chased me down? Don’t know). The only people who could be "caught" by this method are those who already found their way past a fare gate without paying or using illicit fare cards (reduced fare, student, or something that doesn't apply to them). I don't recommend this method in New York unless there's a sure way to stop people from turning around to avoid it. I figure if they found their way past the faregate already they could probably avoid this if they aren’t being chased down. |

If you know anything about NYC subways and buses, you know it just won't work. There are many disagreements on the boards, but everyone was in agreement about the future of the fare checkers in NYC. |
