Re: NYCT hiring fare checkers

My bet is that they will just go with the current inefficient, SBS practice: be plainly obvious in advance of the stop with their uniforms, stop the bus in place (canceling out a good chunk of the time-savings) and check everyone on the bus.

Other possible practices that they probably won't use:
1) Pose as a regular passenger. Sit/stand as appropriate while the vehicle is at a stop. Then when the vehicle starts moving begin conducting checks until the next stop. This is what I saw in Zurich, but I think in New York could be unsafe for the inspector both due to violence and the risk of discrimination claims. (Sometimes in Zurich the inspector sacrifices the incognito status and just has a police officer accompany during the inspection - but the vehicle is still able to move and not held in place).

2) Wear the big scary inspector uniforms and travel as a team, get on the vehicle. But don't let on when you are going to inspect everyone (it may be right away or it may be many stops after you get on) and ultimately do so while the vehicle is moving. You can also stick around when you have no intent to inspect, just to keep people guessing. This is along the lines of what I saw in Stockholm and some other places and may be the best combination of safe and effective for the inspector in New York.

3) In Paris and Milan on the Metro (subways), usually at a big transfer point when trying to switch between lines, I’d just run into a line (wall to wall) of inspectors that you could not just walk past. I think the only option for avoiding would have been to turn around and go back to the platform you were coming from, but I'm not sure what would have happened if I tried that (would they have chased me down? Don’t know). The only people who could be "caught" by this method are those who already found their way past a fare gate without paying or using illicit fare cards (reduced fare, student, or something that doesn't apply to them). I don't recommend this method in New York unless there's a sure way to stop people from turning around to avoid it. I figure if they found their way past the faregate already they could probably avoid this if they aren’t being chased down.
