Happy Birthday MBTA Riverside Line |

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Sun Jul 5 07:20:16 2026 Boston's car line to Riverside opened on July 4, 1959.The extra cars required for this service were taken by converting the car lines out of Harvard Sq. to trackless trolleys. These were the lines from North Cambridge to Watertown and Belmont. |

Too much power concentrated in the hands of municipal government; happened in 1947. And you only use abbreviations like "sq." if you do not have enough space for text such as on a roll sign, not in regular text. |

But of course it isn't actually a "streetcar" line. It doesn't have a single intersection with regular motor vehicle traffic. It's a regular subway line with light rail vehicles. |

"Light Rail" was invented as a "modern" term to market transit projects even though many of the actual cars outweighed the 6000 class elevated/subway cars of CTA which were spoken of as "heavy" rail, and many of these routes are CWR on concrete ties. |

I see your point, but the current operation showcases the huge flexibility of trams/streetcars that was being disregarded by everyone who thought buses should just do everything (which is also why modern tramways are a thing). Buses could not service the corridor and then dip underground with the other Green Line branches with the same capacity and flexibility. Even if the Riverside Line was originally meant for heavy rail vehicles, the light rail vehicles were and are around to fill the void and are interchangeable with the other branches. |

Vehicles can be paired and detached, and even when paired to a combined length far exceeding any bus, the rails enable them to make sharp turns whether in mixed traffic, or elevated or in narrow tunnels. |
