I see your point, but the current operation showcases the huge flexibility of trams/streetcars that was being disregarded by everyone who thought buses should just do everything (which is also why modern tramways are a thing). Buses could not service the corridor and then dip underground with the other Green Line branches with the same capacity and flexibility. Even if the Riverside Line was originally meant for heavy rail vehicles, the light rail vehicles were and are around to fill the void and are interchangeable with the other branches.
