UP 4014

Posted by BILLBKLYN on Mon Jun 15 09:49:26 2026

Myself and my oldest son and dog went to Lehigh Gorge State Park yesterday to watch the Big Boy, did not disappoint! Got into the park before 8, walked the trails with my dog, we packed a cooler with drinks and sandwiches. Crowded but not TOO crowded. First was RBMN 21P2 with her train. They say 2102 is currently the loudest steam loc and I believe it! The stacktalk was deafening! Aa it should be, we got showered with cinders and ashes. Then shortly after a diesel consist came with passenger cars. Then came the Big Boy, it was great, huge to see in motion, I've seen the static display at Steamtown, but when it rides past you, it's impressive, even though he's neutered!

What's neutered about 4014?

I'm thinking of dragging wife to Horseshoe Curve when it goes there. Maybe brave it and do Jim Thorpe on July 2nd, but that'll be a madhouse

I saw it a few years ago in Chamois, MO, going by at speed. It really was impressive. It was a chance meetup, we were driving east from Albuquerque and it was heading west, coming out of St Louis that day. It was just a short trip out of the way and Chamois was where we'd need to wait the least. We stuck out like sore thumbs in our NYC clothes and car with NY plates. Someone did ask how we ended up there. It looked like half the town was there.

I'd like to catch it when it goes by Sewickley Pa on the old PRR Ohio river line near Conway Yard sometime early July. Website says TBD as far as routing in SW Pennsylvania

Yes, but no horsepower has been lost.

And back in the day, a lot of railroads used metal mesh or other devices to stop cinders from escaping out of the smokestack of coal burners.

I DO like the Cab Forwards. In fact, they may be my favorite type of steamers, maybe... I'm partial to Northerns.

#2102 is loud because it actually works. Andy puts 20+ cars in the train so you'd better believe that all 5000 horses are working.

#4014 is worn out after the Month on the road so the diesels were providing most of the pull.

You're talking gobbledygook. There's a 56,000 pound force gap between the tractive efforts of 4014 and 2102; 4014 is always going to need far less throttle to produce the same pulling power.

Yeah. I think that 2102 for now is my favorite steamer. 611 used to be, but it's not the same without Preston Claytor's whistle.

Olog, That's an old practice. You can tell most of the time when the steamer is getting pushed/pulled by the diesel helpers. They do it for several reasons. In fact, on Saturday RBMN had to send out 2 locos to pull 2102, who was going to run our of coal.

That's a different story. Not to mention, the hoggers were probably burning coal inefficiently to produce more black smoke, which would have been utterly frowned on back in the day due to unburned fuel in the form of volatiles going out of the stack.

A locomotive working up hill is converting chemical energy into the potential energy of the train as it is raised in elevation. Every expansion of steam represents a quantity of this energy. Energy per unit time is power. Steam locomotives generate peak power at between 30% and 50% of their maximum speed as that is where the maximum amount of steam can flow from the boiler and perform useful work on the piston. #4014 has 7000hp vs the 5000hp of #2102, but that's a function of its having 4 cylinders and the ability to move more steam. Steam which makes a sound when it exits the stack and forces the exhaust itself higher into the air.

Meanwhile steam locomotives hit peak tractive effort at 0 mph, a point at which they are generating little to no power.

So sure, maybe #4014's 2000 extra HP allow it to tackle this grade with much less visible effort, or perhaps after multiple weeks on the road the diesels were giving it a bit of help.

When 4014 passed me, the diesels were groaning! When 2102 passed me, they were in neutral or idle.

So 2102 had to pull the dead weight of its diesels?

The diesels that accompany 4014 provide dynamic braking. Hence the "groaning".

The 2 diesels behind 4014 were pulling when they passed me. I think everyone here knows when a diesel is idling for dynamic braking/providing heat and electricity for the consist and the diesels pulling
