One kid found on the roadbed, the other one went THRU the roadbed and fell thru the structure. Police boats responded because it was thought the 14 y/o plunged into the East River. He was later found in a lot instead.Now to something I preach about often: what the train crew has to deal with. Questions by NYPD, the OCC and supervision on the scene. Then, because it's assumed the train crew is dirty, they are taken downtown to pee in the cup. Tuesday at 8AM they have to see the NYCT quacks, uh medical staff. Also Labor Relations. But the abuse isn't over yet. The crew is restricted to the platform: stand on your feet all day answering mostly dumb questions in the hot, dirty stations. They can be stuck there for months until all the paperwork is in order and their Line Superintendent signs off on it. All this time, the crew is treated like criminals by senior management as they are not allowed to work their picked job. I went through that nonsense twice in my career and it's not pleasant. Every time a train operator moves that train, it's a risk. This is why they become a Dispatcher or TSS to get off the road. At least half of them are clueless supervisors. Those who stick it out can't wait to pick switching. So glad I'm gone, I discourage people from being a train operator today because it's too risky of a job. As my retirement years go by, I would not do it again. |

So that's why the M and J lines blew up last Friday at about 6:15 pm! This led to delays on Queens Blvd local service because the M was crippled and Queens relies on the M. With the last day of school approaching, I think kids will increase their surfing activity just to bond before summer recess. You would think these kids would be smart enough to canvass the area and look for obstructions like the beams on the Willy B. They pick the most dangerous spots (not the that it's totally safe without obstructions). |

One way to look at it is that they are still on the clock while restricted and will not have to deal with another surfing incident while restricted. But I assume that it will be a straight 40 week & no OT. Loss of the overtime would be the big downside. |

So why subwaysurf there? I'm guessing there is a challenge to it. Maybe the game is to climb up, run a car length then climb down? Something like that. These kids have to know about the bridge trusses and beams so there must be a reason they still do it. |

I saw a group of them once several years ago while I was biking over the bridge. They were using the long straight stretch on the incline of the bridge approach on the Brooklyn side, between the curve over the bus terminal and the stiffening truss which starts near Kent Av. It's about 1800' of straight track with no obstructions at all. Because it's part of the bridge, the reports say they're on the bridge, but they're on the approach, not the bridge itself. Because of the incline the trains don't go especially fast in either direction, but I still can't believe how reckless they were, jumping and running back and forth and leaping from car to car, sometimes passing each other. For a while they were using parts of the #7 line. One was once killed near Rawson St, and our train was delayed while they retrieved the body. Later, as our train approached Citifield we heard others running on top of our train. It was so strange hearing footsteps and pounding on the roof of a subway car. |

I think some of the recent Williamsburg surfers were starting on the Manhattan side and then going to the roof, where a bunch of obstructions are present.At least in your case on the Williamsburg Bridge they were smart enough to do it after clearing obstructions. |
