Tuscarora Almanac for May 13

Posted by irtredbirdr33 on Wed May 13 08:52:26 2026

Tuscarora Almanac for May 13

1968 – from The Book of First Runs

A new station called “148th Street-Lenox Terminal” opens today in the IRT Lenox Avenue Yard. It consists of a single island platform and two tracks.
The entrance is actually on 149 Street and 7 Avenue. # 3 trains had been terminating there since May 5 but had been running light north of the former terminal at 145th Street.

Personnel note: This one kind of slipped in under the radar. The Crystie Street subway opened in November 1967. This event and the aftermath occurred a great deal of attention in the railfan community.
We were also looking forward to the upcoming opening of the 57th Street-6th Avenue station and the connection to the Willy B. So it came as a something of a surprise when we found out that the IRT had a new station in Manhattan.

Now here's a question. What was the last new station(s) opened on the
IRT prior to 148th Street. Was it the Dyre Avenue Line?

1974 – from The Book of First Runs

The “State of the Art Cars”, (SOAC) were presented to the press today. They made a demonstration run on the 6 Avenue Line between 57 Street and Hudson Terminal. They are slated to enter scheduled service running as an extra train two minutes behind a regular one.

The two car train is owned by the US Department of Transportation Urban Mass Transit Administration. Boeing-Vertol is the System Manager for the demonstration. The two cars were built by the St Louis Car Division of General Street Industries using R-44 shells. Car 1 is configured for suburban commuter service and seats 62 passengers with a maximum capacity of 220. It features soft padded seats and includes tables to work at. Car 2 is configured for a high density subway-type service. The seating capacity is 72 with a maximum load of 300.

I know that the platforms of that new express station, and the extended sections of the local station, were built as such:
- 4' 11-3/4" from track center to permanent edge
- 4' 8-1/4" from track center to temporary edge (rubbing board width 3.5")
This standard had been in effect since 1923 when the Transit Commission (available via Google Books or HathiTrust) put out a book of specs for how to build subways, with drawings, measurements, et al. I wonder if the Times Square terminus of the #7 line had their platforms originally built like that. It would last until the building of the new South Ferry terminus of the #1, where the gap between platform and car door threshold was deemed too wide.

And prior to that it was Main St Flushing in 1928, with Times Sq, 5th Ave and Willets Point in 1927. After 148th St is 34th-Hudson Yards and the new South Ferry. Not much happened with the IRT.

I meant to say about Main Street. Was that built with an adapter for IRT service? Given when that opened, I wonder if that was originally built for wide-car BMT service (5' 5-1/2" permanent concrete platform edge from track center), but a 5-3/4" converter was added on (to make it 4' 11-3/4") so that those entering and exiting IRT cars wouldn't have to watch their step?

Something also tells me that had any new IRT trackage and stations been built and opened in the 1930's, they too would have borne IND station design as the three BMT stations that opened in 1931 (Fulton Street, Broad Street and Eighth Avenue) had. But interesting that compared with the IND/BMT network, the IRT basically atrophied after 1928.

The Flushing line was always to IRT standards. The BMT used el cars for service to Astoria and Flushing, Queensboro Plaza was the only station wide enough for subway cars. When they ended the joint service and sent the BMT to Astoria they had to shave back the platforms.

It was only needed after they built the transfer to the 53rd St/Lex stop. But it is needed now. If it were ever rebuilt as an express stop they should build it north from 51st so that it would connedt easier to 53rd. I've used the current transfer a few times and it is not the best.

True as far as the platform width goes. But tunnel dimentions at Main St & beyond TS to Hudson Yds were built to BMT specs.

Swap the services!

Send "B" division to Flushing and connect to the vacant local LIRR ROW to Oyster Bay and adding local stations.

Send the "A" division to Ditmars Ave.

Only will and $$$ is needed.

Lets not get crazy here. First off, forget about any Oyster Bay connection. Send that idea back to deep left field. Next, convert the Flushing line to B division specs. Have those trains go down the 60th St tunnel from Main St to QBP. If any line needed bigger cars, it would be the Flushing line, especially if they send the Airtrain to Willets Point, giving those travelers extra room for their bags.
Make IRT service a shuttle from Hudson Yds to QBP. Leave Astoria service alone, staying a BMT route.

Wouldn't you then need to re-expand Queensboro Plaza to at least a six-track (three tracks on each of two levels) to do that, including putting in a terminal track there for a Hudson Yards-QBP shuttle.

Speaking of the strike, What's up with the MTA insisting that LIRR probationary employees (new hires) report to work, even if they have to cross a picket line?? I've been involved in labor relations at Metro North and going after probies never happened in any collective bargaining situation that I was aware of.
IMO, doing that would be an absolute dealbreaker.

Looks similar to 6th Ave. and 14th St. The 6th Ave. local tracks and PATH tracks are on top, the Larry is in the middle and the 6th Ave. express tracks burrow beneath that whole mess.

True, as most of it would be using existing areas.

The next question is, how would you handle Astoria and Flushing trains both using 60th Street. Do you eliminate or severely limit QBL service from the Broadway Line? Do you for example re-direct the (R) to Flushing to replace the (7)?

Yes, that is how it should be done if they convert 51st to an express stop (actually meaning three straight express stops with the local before actually going express after 59th).

If Phase 3 of the SAS ever gets built, that would be even more important given there would also be a transfer to 53rd/Lex from 55th on the SAS (meaning in theory you could walk from 55th and 2nd to 50th and Lex without going outside). .

The union's response is that it was an illegal threat with no precedent in railway labor, as you say. I don't know the upshot of it yet but I expect there will be engineer trainees on the picket lines, not crossing them to punch in & sit around with their thumbs up their asses.

Thats what will happen if they cross. For example, if Other that train & engine employees show up, with no trains running (or very few qualified and licensed managers running equipment moves) they'll have nothing to do.
