I've always wondered if any of those IND World's Fair front destination signs survived. My front roller curtain has all the interim terminals except Queens-Roosevelt Av and World's Fair.

To get from the mainline IND tracks to the World's Fair station, the trains had to use the yard leads from Kew Gardens and the overpass over the Grand Central Parkway and then go through Jamaica Yard to the tracks along the nowadays Van Wyck Expressway right-of-way. That route is normally not in passenger service. Going through the yard, did they have to observe the strict, slow, yard speed limit, maybe 5-10 mph?

Or did the trains not go through the yard itself but instead go over or around it?

Although the article states that new subway lines were required to be underground, certain documentation from the time indicated otherwise. By the time of unification, the NYW&B ROW had been purchased for use by the IND and plans for the Utica Ave subway called for it to be elevated S/O Ave M. In addition, the line between Carroll St and 4th Ave was elevated so obviously whoever wrote the article was mistaken.

This right of way was reused in the 1960s by the extension of the Van Wyck Expressway north from Kew Gardens to through connect with the former Whitestone Parkway which became the Whitestone Expressway in time for the second World's Fair to use the park in 1964-65.

Makes you wonder if they ever pulled up the wooden pilings when the line was dismantled.

That mindset was in the design stage. Over time the plans evolved into what's out there today. With the capture of the Culver line, that made for a bona fide IND elevated line and the retrofitting of all the R1-9s with windshield wipers. I wonder if the same thing was done with the BMT equipment of the day?

I supposed I understand the reason there were no windshield wipers on the R1/9's originally.

But it rains in train yards when yard moves have to be made!

The BMT equipment would have had windshield wipers from the beginning since most of the BMT’s lines had a substantial amount of outdoor operation.
