I was driving east with my daughter after flying out and meeting her in Albuquerque after she dropped off her boyfriend at the airport. I made a deal where we'd stop to watch at a point where we wouldn't have to wait too long since BigBoy was headed west. Chamois was the spot. (they pronounced it Chamoy, not Chamwah). In exchange we'd stop for BBQ in St. Louis. These are both of our videos. ![]() ![]() |

Coal was a compromise choice. The point is to burn whatever fuel you have to make steam. The ATSF would never have crossed the desert if they could not have had oil-burning steamers. Are steamers fired with straw and sugar cane also not "real" steamers? How about steam cars that were all fired with (gasp) gasoline? |

JFC this is going to be an absolute shitshow. 2102 has been running for years and the posse of train chasers is still insane. Consider that there will be a strong incentive to chase vs ride because so many people have ridden the route and one can get better photos chasing.I wonder if they'll round trip #4014 or have #2102 run the train back given that #4014 is going to hang out in Scranton for a bit. It might also start in Pittston and run to Mach Chunk or Nesquehoning. Major difference vs 2102 will be the oil fireing resulting in less/few cinders. |

May 24, 2025 me and my son rode the open air car behind 2102. I've been on numerous excursions behind her and 425, and the railfans chasing are out of control. We doubt we're gonna get a seat on the train, so I'll go to a spot that no one knows about (at least I haven't seen anyone there before) and watch it pass |

Andy will keep adding cars until he runs out so consider trying to buy some tickets if you want to go.I'll likely be trackside that day, but I will be unlikely to "chase" due to the traffic conditions. |

Posted by Sand Box John on Wed Apr 8 08:32:14 2026, in response to Re: UP 4014, posted by Olog-hai on Wed Apr 8 04:18:33 2026. UP experimented with converting the 4000 class to oil burning when they were still in revenue service. All of the locos in the UP steam program are converted to oil firing to prevent hot cinders from igniting track fires, among other reasons. The most obvious other reason is the logistics needed to load coal in the tender and dumping of the ash from the grate in the fare box. None of the infrastructure to do that exists outside of historic / tourist operated railroads. Water can be loaded from trucks or fire hydrants, oil can loaded from trucks.
