Tuscarora Almanac for January 11 and Transit Trivia

Tuscarora Almanac for January 11 and Transit Trivia

1955 – from The Book of First Runs

This is the first day of operation of the R-16’s in passenger service.
An eight car train running as a BMT #15 Jamaica Local left 168 Street-Jamaica Terminal in Queens at 10:00 AM and consisted of 6404,6407,6402,6400,6409,6403,6401,6408.

1958 - from The Book of Last Runs

The operation of Rail Diesel Cars (RDC’s) on the Susquehanna Railroad is discontinued. The four RDC-1’s; M-1 through M-4, were acquired by the Jersey Central and re-numbered in order to 558 through 561. RDC 559 along with sister 557 made the last passenger run on CNJ’s Newark Branch on April 29, 1967.

Transit Trivia No. 6

Fourth Avenue Subway

If the BRT Fourth Avenue Subway had been built as planned it would have had four tracks all the way to 100th Street.

South of 36th Street there would have been stations at 44th, 52nd, 60th, 68th, 77th, 86th, 92nd and 100th Streets. The stations at 60th Street and 100th Street would have been express stops. The line would then have continued to a yard at 101st Street.

Credit to the late Mr. David Rogoff for this information

If they had tried a little harder, they could have coupled those R-16s sequentially.:) I'm willing to bet more than one patron asked, "What's a 15?" I know I did the first time I rode on them.

Way back when when I was a wee lad, I'd see a passing Jamaica bound #15 train from my seat on a Jamaica bound LIRR train and think the same thing. The last number I remembered seeing on a train was a #7 Flushing line train, wondering what lines were between #s 7 & 15?.

Once we had boarded that particular 15 train at Marcy Ave., I glanced at a side route sign and saw "15 Jamaica Local."

The Flushing Line #7 was part of the IRT (A-Division) route numbers introduced in 1948, and still used today.

The BMT had its own set of route numbers introduced in the 1920s. They ran from 1-16.
1: Brighton
2: 4th Ave
3: West End
4: Sea Beach
5: Culver-5th Ave and later also Culver-Nassau
6: Bay Ridge-5th Ave
7: Franklin
8: Astoria shuttle
9: Flushing shuttle
10: Myrtle-Chambers
11: Myrtle-Park Row
12: Lexington
13: Fulton
14: Canarsie-Broadway (Brooklyn)
15: Jamaica
16: 14th St (Canarsie)

There was another number in the BMT numbering scheme, #17 which was for the 14th Fulton service which was started in the mid 1930s with the introduction of the Multis. Despite it being semi official, the Multis never received those readings so Lefferts bound 14th/Fultons displayed the number 13 and 8th Ave bound 14th/Fultons displayed the number 16.

It’s intersting that BMT passengers would wonder about the assigned number since the Multis in the 14th St Line had been displaying the number 16 for 14th/Canarsie and number 13 for 14th/Fulton St for the previous 20 years.

The BMT numbers never really caught on with the riding public - mainly because most BMT-designed equipment did not have front route or destination signs. People referred to routes by their names: Brighton, Sea Beach, West End, Culver, Jamaica, Canarsie, etc.

I'm willing to bet that up until the R-16s made their debut, no one had ever seen a train with a 15 marking. The late Karl B said that when the R-16s were new, people loved them.

I rode them on the BMT Eastern Division in the 1960's and they seemed to ride well and had a longitudinal/transverse seating arrangement which was similar to the R10 and not repeated on any subsequent 60 foot subway car. This of course was before the graffiti artists destroyed them as well as every other car on the system.

It was the BMT designed equipment that had front route and destination signs. It was the BRT designed equipment that didn’t.

IMHO had the R-16s never left the Three Stooges Division, they would held up much better. They lived an easy life over there, plus the good folks at ENY shops knew how to take care of them.

True, but the BMT standards outnumbered the rest of the fleet combined.

We call them BMT Standards but they were designed and built before the BMT even existed.

This was true. They got a lot of abuse when they got sent all over the B division. The GE cars were more problematic than the WH cars.

Was the Susquehanna Railroad related to the Susquehanna Hat Company?
