[PHOTO] R-40 "Slant" #4482

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Mon Nov 24 13:55:34 2025

This photo taken in Coney Island yard on November 9, 1968 raises two questions.
Question #1. The early R-40 slants were renumbered, so was this car number originally #4282 ?
Question #2. Were these pictured cars delivered from the St.Louis Car Co with or without pantograph gates installed ?

Bill: This picture was taken in 1968. So the original number was 4482. It was re-numbered to 4382 in 1970.

Before the cars entered service they were displayed at 34th Street, I believe. They lack any frontal hardware. When they first entered service the low railing was installed. Later on the started adding more and more hardware.

Shortly after the slants arrived, my brother and I rode them on the F in Queens, and we moved from car to car between Queens Plaza and Roosevelt Av, and with only the low hand-holds, we were pretty scared, because you were really out there with very little protection or barriers, and it was a long way from one car door to the other and no grab bars within reach.

They were ugly as delivered and even uglier after the modifications.
Their replacements, the R40Ms, were among the most beautiful ever delivered.

April, 1968, low hand-holds only:

August, 1968, low hand-holds and pantograph gates:

December, 1968, high hand-holds and chains, and pantograph gates:

September, 1968:

Thanks. Great shots of the early days.

I liked the "mods" much more than the R42's, especially post GOH when they were in solid trains on the J line.

Ya' beat me to it. I was about to mention this was one of the A/C slants. Yep, this was one of the group originally numbered 4450-4549, before being shifted to 4350-4549.

I have my doubts as to the date of the photo since I don’t recall the cars being retrofitted with the safety bars and pantograph gates that early.

That was the date rubber stamped on the 35mm slide. Unless it was an error.

Thank you for these photographs. I always liked the large route letter roll-sign on the front of the train.

Speaking of which, I didn't notice those huge signs initially, believe it or not. We were waiting at 34th St.-Herald Square when a new slant Fred train pulled in. My mother remarked, "That's an F train," and I asked, "How can you tell?" She pointed out the large magenta F. I had gotten so used to looking above the storm door for route and destination signs that I totally missed it. My sister liked the slants even though she is definitely not a subway buff, as we rode that train one stop to 42nd St., where we changed to a D.
