Shortly after the slants arrived, my brother and I rode them on the F in Queens, and we moved from car to car between Queens Plaza and Roosevelt Av, and with only the low hand-holds, we were pretty scared, because you were really out there with very little protection or barriers, and it was a long way from one car door to the other and no grab bars within reach. They were ugly as delivered and even uglier after the modifications. Their replacements, the R40Ms, were among the most beautiful ever delivered.
