Friday Mystery Photo

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Fri Nov 14 19:38:55 2025

Photo by Steve Zabel, no date given.
(RR) at Fulton St on the Nassau St subway. GE R-16 #6454.
Is this a (RR) or (RJ) ? The destination part of the sign is blank.
Didn't the R-16's have 168th St or Chambers St on the roll sign ? What route do you think it is ?

Could it be an RR re-route?

I think it's a Banker Special also.

I'd estimate this picture was taken after the RJ's demise in 1968 and an RR variant terminating north at Chambers Street (in alternation with the Broadway route to Astoria) was started.

Someone wrote "Down with Larry" in chalk or in the steel dust. What does that mean?

I think the carbody lights are off. Train might be out of service.

It may be a light RR layup. At the end of the PM rush, a few RR layups from 95th St ran light to Chambers St and laid up on the H tracks N/O the station. In the AM M-F, those same trains were put in S/B and ran in service from Chambers to 95th St where they went into service as N/B Bankers’ Specials.

The "RJ" was discontinued in June,1968. It was replaced by several "RR" Nassau Street Locals. These train ran from 95th Street to Chambers Street M-F from 746 to 833 AM

Southbound service ran from Chambers Street to 95th Street M-F from 527-716 AM and 449 to 526 PM.

Thus is one of those trains at Chambers Street.

The Banker Specials only ran pre-Chrystie Street and they carried "M" Nassau Street signage. This is the Nassau Street "RR" which began running in July 1968.

What I recall, and just confirmed by looking at NYCSubway.org, is that the R16s did NOT have a 95th St sign on them. When they were put on the RR the side signs had a 95th St sticker placed on the outside. So if this was one of the Nassau St. Specials it wouldn't have one on the end car facing south.

Do a search of the R16s and "BMT 4th Avenue Line" on NYCSubway and you'll see.

And one other thing, leave it to the MTA to assign a car class to line that it doesn't have the signs for.

Kind of like the Q today, mostly with no 96th/2nd signs on the R68s.

Up until the late 89s,the RR had rush hour trains going up Nassau Street, usually R16s

Yeah, I was about to say, the 'RR' alone dated this pic to immediately after July 1968.

That is correct. There were Nassau variants of the Broadway "RR". A short time before they were discontinued they received the brown color for the Nasau Street Line.

Hmm. According to NYCSUBWAY.ORG, maps from 1968, 1969 and 1972 show rush hour RR's going to/from Chambers St with a dashed green line.

Was this service just a M train or did the RR's not run at all?

The RRs were green but this was a black RR sign. This was a Nassau RR.

Although the post Chrystie lines had various official colors, not all the cars got signs that displayed them. Many cars just got the old fashioned pre Chrystie, white on black signs for the new routes.

The eventual goal of the TA was to do away with end destination signs entirely so no post Chrystie end destination signs were prepared.

That was a dumb move, IMHO. The R-211s are righting that wrong.

The R-16s only had Three Stooges Division destination signs immediately after Chrystie St - except for the 32 that were loaned to Jamaica Yard in August of 1966.

Trains 61 : It is nice to hear from you. I hope that all is well with the guild.

With the opening of the Chrystie Street Line in November 1967 individual colors were assigned to each subway line. The “”RR” was identified by a green line. Its Nassau Street variant , the “RJ” was colored red.

The “RJ” had a short life and was discontinued at the end of June 1968. Its replacement was a branch of the “RR” running between Chambers Street and 95th Street during the rush hours. It used the same green line as the Broadway “RR” but the list was dotted to indicate a part time or rush hour service.

The “M” was a separate service at this time identified by a blue line.

The 1972 map shows the “RR” to Chambers Street as a solid line although it continued to run only during rush hours.

The Diamond Jubilee Map was issued in June 1979. All subway routes would now have the same color corresponding to their main line of operation. The BMT Broadway trains; N,QB, RR would now be colored yellow. This would apply to the Chambers Street service as well. Double letters were discontinued in May, 1985 so thereafter the “RR” became the R”.

The Eastern Division Nassau Street services; J and M, would be colored brown.

The map issued on May 24, 1987 finally shows the Nassau Street “R” with the Brown Nassau Street color. This only lasted until November 1987 when the Nassau Street “R” was discontinued.

There was a period in where both the “M” Myrtle Av-Nassau St- West End Local and the “R” Myrtle Av-Nassau St- 4th Avenue Local were operating at the same time. But that is a story for another day.

The Guild, is indeed alive and well. Thanks for asking. As Cortelyounext, can tell you, things don't stop in the transportation industry (Airline Division).

Many thanks for the detailed breakdown and continuing to publish the almanac. I make it a daily habit to read it and then go to nycsubway.org to look at the photos for that day.

Thank you again irtredbirdr33.
