I just looked up some sample fares on Amtrak from 1972; from NYP to Philly was $5.25, which works out to $41.38 in 2025 dollars. But you can ride in coach on Northeast Regional for as low as $15. (Meanwhile, NJT from NYP to Trenton is $19.25 and SEPTA from Trenton to Center City is $13, for a total of $32.25 one way on the "cheaper" commuter rail option.) |

On the Hudson Line, Shoreliner car #6152 (Poughkeepsie) came fron the factory as a standard coach. It was converted to a bar car by ripping out several rows of seats and Bolting in a platform bar to the floor and a few luggage racks for standing room. There were many a good times had back in those days. I met a few life long friends there. One time they had a retirement party for a regular and hired a stripper for the occasion (with a nice contribution to the conductor to look the other way). The beginning of the end for the Hudson Line bar car was the smoking ban in the late 80s. Back then, who ever heard of a bar that you couldn't smoke in? MN commissary even sold cigarettes (Marlboro red pack and Newports IIRC) Initially it was ignored until they planted plainclothes MN police which started to hand out $50 tickets. Caught employees were brought up on charges with discipline of 10 day record suspensions. So little by little they blanked the bartenders job until the job was abolished outright. Then they ripped out the floor bolted bar and reinstalled seats where the bar was. Last time I rode in #6152 if you look closely on the river side of the car, you can see the patched up holes in the middle of the coach above the window where the NYS liquor license was bolted in. All good things really do come to an end:( |

It’s a start, a very very welcome start. The price point is competitive with Amtrak's months-ahead reservation pricing, and it doesn't require reservations. If you live up here and need/want to go to the city on short notice it'll be a godsend. I know I’ll be using it.The single daily trip thing will NOT last for long. It’s anticipated to be a full fledged service within a very short time. Ridership and demand will see to that. |

I've been doing it for much of the summer and I tell ya, it sucks! Amtrak is too expensive on a short notice basis (up to $100+ if there’s a seat to had) and the traffic over the MidHudson bridge can be murderous at times, usually when you're trying to get to a train on time. All that driving gets to be a drag. It’s three hours out (both directions) of your day.Wish they thought of it sooner. Like six months ago. Getting on a train directly from Albany to NYC without the extortionate fare has long been a dream for many around here. |

Albany to NYC and back works with driving to Poughkeepsie. But even then you're driving half way (admittedly the easy half).NYC to Albany doesn't work by taking a train to Poughkeepsie doesn't work. There's no car rental at the railroad station. To the best of my knowledge, the only MNRR stations that have car rentals nearby are New Rochelle, Stamford, Scarsdale, and North White Plains. Those do come in handy because the prices are often less than rentals in NYC. |

They could mitigate it by adding cars to each train, or more trains. But do they have the rolling stock? Getting new would only put pressure on already high fares. The MTA seems to have an easier time with seeking funding. Makes for a better position to expand. |

The M8 cars will have to use third rail power in order to reach NYP as they are not designed to run on 25Hz AC as that is what the former PRR electrification uses. The New Haven line uses 60Hz AC as it has since the old New Haven RR plant at Cos Cob was retired and the line changed to using commercial power instead. |
